But curiously 'asymmetrically' (I'm sure there's a better word) in terms of sunrise and sunset times.
... yes - sunset has been getting a little later for quite a few days now, well before the solstice - and sunrise goes on getting later for a little while yet, only getting earlier well in to January. I think this has been explored on these boards in some detail in previous year's comments on the solstice.

Absolutely.... as a nuit-blanche night owl who still frequently sees in the dawn (with its dense wary flurry of hungry birds) between her two attempted sleeps, I say a silent prayer to the god of light. Winter is like a tunnel, and we have passed the deepest, darkest point...
A little over that, if you mean the sidereal day. However, a solar day on Earth is a little over 24 hours and both, I think you will find, are gradually getting longer.
