    Winter solstice has passed

Winter solstice 2018 in Northern Hemisphere was at 22:23 on Friday, 21 December.

So the days will be getting longer, and the nights shorter now!

If generally colder, for a while yet.

But curiously 'asymmetrically' (I'm sure there's a better word) in terms of sunrise and sunset times.

But is that fake news, or unscientific speculation? This wobble stuff and discussion of Planet X - which seems to be hypothetical - does seem a bit "new age". There might be something in it, but ....

O.K., minus the new age stuff about this Planet X thing, http://hosting.astro.cornell.edu/aca...1/sun_rise.htm .

... yes - sunset has been getting a little later for quite a few days now, well before the solstice - and sunrise goes on getting later for a little while yet, only getting earlier well in to January. I think this has been explored on these boards in some detail in previous year's comments on the solstice.

EDIT - further info here :

Today is the shortest day of the year, but it doesn't follow that mornings will start getting brighter from now on.

Absolutely.... as a nuit-blanche night owl who still frequently sees in the dawn (with its dense wary flurry of hungry birds) between her two attempted sleeps, I say a silent prayer to the god of light. Winter is like a tunnel, and we have passed the deepest, darkest point...

Not obvious, as not strictly true. Days are gradually getting longer if one thinks of the nominally 24 hour day.

But not at both ends - mornings still short and evenings longer!

An earth day is actually 23 hours, 56 min.

A little over that, if you mean the sidereal day. However, a solar day on Earth is a little over 24 hours and both, I think you will find, are gradually getting longer.

I like this time of the year,
                              I like the autumn
I don't "look forward" to the summer in the way that so many seem to
                              Roll on the bleak snow
