We have a cinema in Edinburgh called the Dominion which is one of the very few independent cinemas left. It's been owned by the Cameron family for, iirc, about 80 years. They offer the same facilities as the Odeon in London but the prices are much more modest.

So long as there's no sugar or salt added, popcorn is indeed a fibrously healthy snack. (Not particularly flavoursome, though - hence the additions of salt and/or sugar.)

We have a cinema in Edinburgh called the Dominion which is one of the very few independent cinemas left. It's been owned by the Cameron family for, iirc, about 80 years. They offer the same facilities as the Odeon in London but the prices are much more modest.

Is that the same place as the one near the Usher Hall (and the Shakespeare Bar ) and a few "shops" down from a rather good Italian restaurant? (I had a feeling that was called The Picture House, but ... ) I once mistimed a mid-week break in Edinburgh for the end of September, expecting a concert/recital, a Theatre trip: zilch! That cinema gave me all I needed - really good, old and off-centre films, for about £12 a pop (and, because I bought three tickets, I got into the fourth for a fiver). And it is close to the Shakespeare bar!

My favourite "local" cinema is the Hebden Bridge Picture House (which is where I might have got the idea from). £7 a ticket (£6 for state pensioners) with (on Thursday morning showings) a free coffee included in the price. Very comfortable, and a really good selection of films. No popcorn or ice cream - but home-made cakes on offer.

Does the Dominion in Edinburgh really have "dual-laser Dolby Vision projectors which create an image more than twice as bright and 500 times the contrast ratio of a typical cinema" and a "truly immersive 400-speaker Dolby Atmos setup"?

Someone should tell the Odeon Leicester Square, as they are claiming to be the first cinema in the UK to offer this sort of setup.

They were always for two, but I never managed to persuade any member of the female staff to accompany me - women were far more sensible in them days - nevertheless, I did get to see all the current James Bond movies, plus a few of the parody spy movies such as Our Man Flint and Modesty Blaise.

Hi Ferney. No, that's the Filmhouse in Lothian Road which is essentially an art house cinema although they do show mainstream movies as well. It's a terrific cinema which shows many foreign language films as well as themed seasons and children's movies. The Filmhouse is one of the few cinemas that can still show 35mm and 70mm movies as well as 16mm and various digital formats. I've been lucky enough to have visited the projection room of the main auditorium and it's pretty impressive! They are in possession of a 16mm print of mine that's apparently quite rare and I hope they'll show it one day!

To be honest, I don't know but their projection has always been extremely good going back to when I first frequented the cinema in the late 60's! Is that what they're saying in their website? If so, then it'll definitely be true.

It is a marvellous place - but then, that's Edinburgh in general for you!
