Who lives (or lived) in a castle?

The lady wife and I have managed to convince ourselves that a certain celebrated conductor (or possibly a singer), possibly German or Austrian, owned or lived in a castle to which he would retreat when his schedule permitted, or was at least (in)famous for being very reclusive when not on the podium or stage. Can anybody out there suggest of whom we might be thinking, or have we imagined the whole thing?

There are certain parallels in what you describe with Adelina Patti, who retired to Craig-y-Nos in/near the Brecon Beacons:

And Count Numa Labinsky (a sometime baritone) founded Nimbus records, basing a CD factory (that used to provide pressing facilities for many other recording companies) in his home:

Could it be that outstanding musician, André Rieu? (Runs for the hills).

My ancestors had castles up and down the country. Unfortunately, Henry Tudor got in the way.

Whichever combination of 'German/Austrian/Castle/Conductor/Composer' I've googled, M.Rieu has come up first.

I think it is unfortunately. If only my ancestor won the Battle of Bosworth Field, things would’ve been so different.

... brassbandmaestro - you are special because you are you. You are not special because you have royal ancestors. We all have royal ancestors -

We are all special, which also means that none of us is. This is merely a numbers game.

As I believe I've mentioned before, my great-grandfather was butler at Wyastone Leys, and my grandfather was born in the butler's cottage. Just to throw down a challenge to BBM

Sorry, my great grandfather was a butler, not a musician of any sort.

I reckon that you might be thinking of the tenor Klaus Wunderlich died aged only 35 whilst falling down a stone stairway at a friend's castle in Heidelberg?

I actually felt quite upset for a quite a while when I discovered Wunderlich's sad fate.

One of Shakespears Sister lived in a castle as a child.

I was once told that an ancestor of mine, a Lord Brackenbury, was in charge of the Tower of London at the time the princes were murdered. Not a reputation to be lived down the centuries!

It fits Carlos Kleiber - except I have no idea what kind of residence he had....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
