I may have missed something or is it now not possible to download individual tracks and only full programmes - eg I may want a couple of items from Through the Night but not 6 hours of music.

A quick check shows that the individual items listed on the TtN pages are at a much lower audio quality than the whole programme, i.e. 128kbps joint stereo mp3 versus 320kbps stereo AAC-LC. Video Downloadhelper was used to carry out the check of the former, and get_iplayer for the latter.

I may have missed something. Apparently one feature of Sounds is that Podcasts can also be handled within the same program.

I can remember a time when iPlayer did TV and radio. Will a future "update" - yet more churn - bring everything back into one application, with yet more fanfares about progress, and keep more people employed in the process?

R4 Feedback 02/11/18 16:30: The BBC's Director of Radio and Music, Bob Shennan, answers questions from Roger Bolton: What will be the measure of success [of Sounds]? Shennan: "I'd like to think that we would by two or three years' time have added both an absolute number of people consuming the BBC who are under 35 who weren't previously consuming it and also to have added the amount of listening. . . "

I trust you have all been consuming at least some BBC today.

              Heard it.

It sat neatly alongside the item on the ladettification of Radio 2 in which they managed not to use the word "ladette".

Incidentally, all of the podcasts that were mentioned...….not one of them appealed.

...and it is becoming even more blatantly obvious they don't give a tinkers about the over 60s!

There is an index to all of last week's R3 music available on BBC Sounds here.

Click on 'Link' to go to the BBC programme web page, then click on 'Play' to access the BBC Sounds page. The work in question is usually to be found by navigating on the Sounds slider to the offset in hh:mm:ss shown in the index immediately before 'Link'. (This is sometimes spot-on, but sometimes a bit adrift - BBC error, not mine (I hope)).

The index updates weekly in the early hours of Saturday, but I'm hoping soon to update it daily, provide a continuous index over 30+ days and to add a search facility.

In the meantime, data for other weeks can be accessed by changing the date in the web address to a suitable Saturday (e.g. 2018-10-20, 2018-10-13, 2018-10-06) or by using the 'Playlists' dropdown > Alphabetic Lists and selecting the appropriate date.

I've set up an experimental database based on the R3 playlists. It updates daily in the early hours for the previous day. You can browse the last 30 days' worth here.

There are links to the R3 programme page and also to the BBC Sounds page. The listing contains timing info in hh:mm:ss which can be used to position the slider in the appropriate position on the Sounds player. It also gives an approximate indication of the remaining time before the programme expires.

There is also a simple search facility (instructions included) which allows searching over a period of up to 400 days on composer and work and also on programme. (Searches are bookmarkable, so a search for a certain composer / work is repeatable without the need for typing.)

I'd be grateful for any reports of bugs here.

That'll keep us happy for hours

One thing (minor really), I entered only *Reich and 399 days. A whole host of Steve Reich pieces, but also Reicha, Reiche, Helmreich, Streich. Doesn't take long to scroll down to Reich, but is there a way to eliminate all the other names?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Absolutely wonderful Andrew ........ Skellers played a lovely slow movement by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco the other morning and checking on here I found it but also that there had been another piece of his played in the last 30 days .... I shall give the Search facility a try and let you know how I find it ........

I knew it! Piazzolla Libertango has been played 14 times in the last 13-14 months (399 days)

                              30 plays in 399 days?

Not a composer I've really been aware of. Just listened to the Ballade for violin & piano. I must find out more about this composer. The database (which I started thinking about 3 years ago) is already proving its worth.

One hint: don't use '+' in searches - it won't work. Use '*' (asterisk) instead.
