Piston - Three New England Sketches (Mountains)?

Possibly...but the last symphonic poem of Smetana's Má Vlast is called Blaník, named for the mountain...
and whilst on the subject of Smetana's Má Vlast (as his name appears twice) the first symphonic poem is called The High Castle, so a feasible connection with Mussorgsky's The Old Castle movement from Pictures at an Exhibition.

And I smell a "Woods" series in here...Ireland's We'll to the Woods No More, J. Strauss II's Tales from the Vienna Woods and obviously Sondheim's Down to the Woods. Schumann Forest Scenes. Lots of possiblities arise.

We do indeed go into the woods (and forests) - 'into' rather than 'down to' in one case.
As for the as yet undiscovered linking theme, have a think about 'The Hebrides'.......
You might also like to think about another movement from 'Ma Vlast' other than the (already correctly identified) Moldau/Vltava.

Correct - there are four 'tragic' symphonies/sinfonias.

And Flay, the connection between Subotnick and Mosolov is indeed metals - these two composers (largely known for just one work) are the low-hanging fruit for this group. But now it's metal detectors out!
