The second row is what you might call 'non-classical'.

So my earlier consideration but dismissal of Leonard Cohen was premature?

I don't think I ever said that everybody in my wall was a composer, although the great majority are...
            A couple more clues:
            Operas
            RIP
(Did I mention that you've still to find the right Arthur?)

George Michael is correct. He and Leonard Cohen and two others all .....?
Line 1 is correct. They all attended a music conservatory from a very young age: BB was 9, VB 9, GG 10 and LB 6.
Line 3 is correct. They all won the Prix de Rome for composition.
The 'telly music' is in line 4 and the 'departures' in line 2.

Correct - David Bowie, George Martin, George Michael and Leonard Cohen all died in 2016.
Which just leaves the operas composed for performance on TV by Bohuslav Martinu, Benjamin Britten and 2 other 'Brits' - Malcolm and Arthur.

I feel bad for swooping in at the last moment once most of the work has been done. This is like AA ony much more complex - certainly to set the puzzle. Well done!

Thank you to everyone who played along. I didn't want to make things TOO complicated - it's difficult to know precisely how to pitch these things.
                              For the record:
The first 4 all entered music conservatories aged 10 or younger.
                              The TV operas were:
Martinu - The Marriage OR What Men Live By
                              Arnold - The Open Window
Bliss - Tobias and the Angel
Britten - Owen Wingrave (which, according to Humphrey Carpenter, the composer HATED....)

                                Line D rings a bell

                                Liszt - La Cloche Sonne
Franck - Les Cloches du soir
Saxton - The Ring of Eternity
                                Wagner - ??? I'm flummoxed
