(Incidentally, are there any 'Only Connect' fans out there? For the first time ever, I got 75% of a Wall!)

I love Only Connect ... it was the cause of my buying my first digital telly (when it was on BBC4). And I thought that the "Centre of Gravity" question was beautiful!

          Wasn't it just - Beethoven's 7th! I was completely fooled.

Should we start a new thread for Only Connect?

I did wonder about this, but it looked as if LMcD and I were the only Forumistas who follow (or even know about) the programme, so thought I'd keep references on here either to fade away or ignite the sort of interest that would "justify" a separate Thread.

Any other Only Connect aficionadi hereabouts?

I sometimes watch OC - but it took a while to get into.

Does anyone here watch Bake Off? [and be prepared to admit it ...] In the latest series I wonder if Paul Hollywood et al have gone too far - could they actually make the challenges they set in the time and under the same conditions? I'm not convinced.

OTOH I do think Paul H is pretty good, and seems very knowledgeable.

Haven't seen the last UC - so presume that the gravity reference was to that, rather than to OC. "Relevant" now that some posts have been moved to this thread.

                      I'm keen, ferney.

I would be keen on a general quiz thread so long as it doesn't veer strongly towards the big money making ones. I only rarely dip into The Chase which I find a bit cheap. But I'm keen on Round Britain Quiz, Only Connect, Brain of Britain, Pointless, Eggheads, Counterpoint (music!), University Challenge, Mastermind - and the resurrected Puzzle Panel on R4E is a joy.

Quizzes are brilliant because they are safe.

There is nothing of the modish, "newsish" here and now.

No - the "gravity" puzzle (and it was gorgeous!) was part of Only Connect last night.

I'd forgotten about Puzzle Panel until you mentioned it a week or so ago, Lats - hosted by "Christmas Lanka" Only Connect is closer to Round Britain Quiz in its need for both general knowledge and - <ahem> - lateral thinking; working out what to do with the knowledge to get to the answers. But OC is blessedly free of the self-conscious ponderings of the contestants - not least because of the need to work out the puzzles in a much shorter time. And, of course, because of the self-dprecating wit of Victoria Coren-Ferney.

Christmas Lanka - I know, that's absolutely brilliant : a play on words : I used to revel in having been to junior school with Digby Christmas (no play on words) but that beats it. I do know what you mean about self-conscious ponderings in a quiz context but I have no issues with those. I'm all for super-posh intellectual fun for the sake of it as long as I don't sense they are raking money in (which mainly they are not as they are generally up their own arpeggios). It's not their brains. I just think "thank god there are still some individuals around".
