      Yup:

Breaking News:News Corp. says this Sunday will be the last ever edition of News of The World

      Hello Sunday Sun ....?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

And yet only yesterday the editor was saying "Please be assured that, as Editor, I will do everything in my power to restore the News of the World's reputation for fair, accurate and, most importantly, responsible journalism."

        NI are panicking.

James Murdoch admits that the illicit activities went deeper than they admitted to before (misled parliament etc) - however by ceasing the title they hope a new 'Sunny' News of the World will take over the building - and if anyone believes that the organisation has changed wants their little heads examining !

Yes, I noticed that they were still inviting people to sign up. I assume this is an attempt to cut out the cancer before it climbs up the trouser leg of a Murdoch - sorry for the metaphor. Is it too late for that? Certainly with what's been revealed some people are going to end up in gaol, but who?

You have to admire Murdoch's brilliant chutzpah in closing the NotW.

It's very important to consider this development on conjunction with the furore over the BSkyB deal.

Prescott (never my favourite politician) is making great sense - 'two finger salute' by the elder Murdoch to our law etc -

I've always had a soft-spot for Prescott ever since he reacted so honestly to the bloke who egged him and since I learned that Nicholas Soames used to yell 'Gin & tonic for me, Giovanni' at him across the floor of the House, referring to Prescott's time in the Merchant Navy. To give Prescott his due, he's stuck with this one - let's hope it proceeds to a decent conclusion for him.

It could get interesting if any of the sacked journos decide to spill the beans.

Yes, that's probably exactly what will happen. A clever move by Murdoch, as the advertisers haven't boycotted his other papers.

Closing the NotW - as johnb implied - is a desperate attempt to save the BSkyB deal. One could be fooled by the donations to good causes &c &c &c. As Ken Clarke said: "All they're going to do is rebrand it".

But it's a bit sad. The paper was historic, founded in 1843 and I don't imagine it was anything like the Murdoch version then (even though it had long been heading down that route).

Mmmmm, is The Sun relishing this?
