It's true that millions buy tabloid newspapers, but the editors make sure that terrible scandals like this do not get exposed in their pages. I would suspect that until the recent television news coverage, very few tabloid readers had much of an inkling of what was going on. Papers like the Guardian can be very self righteous at times, and are not averse to hiding things from readers. It has taken Private Eye to point out that the Guardian group lost £33m last year, a fact that was not published in the paper.
Nevertheless, without the broadsheet exposures we would have found out very little.
It might be worth having a sustained campaign against the tabloids, but I'm not optimistic, especially as any civil actions taken by the victims will take months to trickle through the courts, and by that time much will have been forgotten, and the Murdoch crowd rely on this.

Even if the News of the World goes under, I have heard that a Sun on Sunday has been mooted.

This petition has had 70,000 signatures in just over a day. 20,000 have been added since I last looked about four hours ago.

sounds from the reports of the Commons debate that the punters are now turning on their whores - sounds as if a couple are finally gunning for son James (+ not it seems before time)

Murdoch is now publicly backing Brooks who, it appears, was on holiday when Milly Dowler's phone was hacked. Oh, and she was also on holiday when the Soham murder parents' phones were, possibly, hacked ...

So, do we assume that she is 'unassailable'?

Fine debate and well opened with a terrific speech from Chris Bryant MP.

Murdoch is playing a very risky (or desperate) game by taking that line, which was greeted with derision by Roy Greenslade on PM. It could very well back-fire on News International, Murdoch and Brooks. It depends on how gullible people are - but then again, politicians are often eager to be gullible where Murdoch is concerned.

did you miss the broadcast interview yesterday by a member of Commons mediacommittee investigating the 1st case of phone 'hacking' - having got a brushoff from said Brooks they had thought of compelling her to give evidence but were warned off as such might not be to their own personal advantage - i presume he was worried that w****s are nasty when cornered

This thing goes much deeper than the long-standing and mind-boggling amorality of much of the British Press, not just the NOTW, however abhorrent that might be to most of us.

As far as I'm concerned, even more serious is the whiff of possible police corruption involved here ....

Any police officer compromising his/her position by accepting payments from a journalist should be drummed out of the force and charged in a court of law, accordingly.

The Press and Police have recently been hounding politicians (and bankers) for wrongdoing ... maybe now they should be looking nearer to home to expose some obviously pretty rotten apples of their own ...

What comes next, from the propietor that brought us the laughably hoaxed Hitler diaries, revelations that Himmler and the Fuhrer happened to be holidaying together in Baden Baden in the week that the plan to exterminate the jews was approved.

C'mon Rupie, you cannot ride this storm with talk of 'the odd rotten apple' and 'mice playing when the cats away' balderdash. You only have to look at the list of those hacked, which is absurdly long, to realise that there was a practice at play at News International which was wholly systemic.

If this was happening in the US I very much suspect RM would be an ex-citizen by now. And therin lies a question. America requires holders of news and broadcasting outlets to be citizens of the land. Why don't we?

the first thing to do is to get them to pay taxes - however the key person here is son James - already named in Commons as buying off trouble, he was whisked out off the job as when the first whiff of the brown stuff becoming uncovered started to appear

The Royal British Legion has dropped the paper as its campaigning partner.

I was both amused and appalled by a doorstep interview with super-snoop Glenn Mulcaire. Not surprisingly he didn't say much, but without a trace of irony asked the assembled hacks to respect his family's privacy.

Honestly, you couldn't make it up.
