Dudley Sutton RIP

While he will, for many people, be best remembered for his role as Tinker in 'Lovejoy', I've not seen any reference to his wonderful performance as a world-weary schoolteacher in 'The Beiderbecke Affair'. Nice to read a message from fellow 'Lovejoy' actor Chris Jury.

Indeed - and was the Beiderbecke trilogy that immediately came to my mind when I saw the Thread title where his performance managed to be simultaneously flamboyant and understated.

Yes he was for many years one of those ubiquitous supporting actors and given a substantial role as Tink. RIP Dudley.

A recent film appearance (yet to be released) was in Steven Berkoff's "Tell Tale Heart" for which I had the pleasure of writing the score. Happy memories of Lovejoy. Farewell Dudley.

I had the good fortune to meet Barbara Flynn in Penzance a few years ago and I happened to mention how much I liked the Beiderbecke series and she said how good was Alan Plater and that was an attraction in taking part in it.

Have you ANY idea how jealous I am? Among her many fine achievements over the years, I would mention in particular her performance as Robbie Coltrane's long-suffering wife in 'Cracker'.
Were I to compile a bucket list meetings, however brief, with Barbara Flynn and Laura Linney would be right at the top.
Quite a long time ago, I met Jean Heywood, who appeared alongside James Bolam in 'When The Boat Comes In', and I asked her, among other things, whether he was ever out of work. 'Only when he chooses to be' was the reply. I guess that's as true now as it was then.

James Bolam may be Britain's most under-rated major actor, ever. He can do comedy, he can do drama: he can carry a series and he can lend support. He's never flash but he's always more than just 'solid'. When The Boat Comes In is one the best series ever made by British television: it's actually aged a lot better than Our Friends In The North, with which it has much (thematically) in common.

But getting back to Dudley Sutton: a great supporting actor who always made his presence felt. Joe Orton didn't envisage Mr. Sloane as looking like a physical culture demonstrator but as looking like Dudley, which is why he got to create the part.

You may have guessed that I, too, am a great fan of James Bolam. I admired him in particular for accepting the role of the diabolical Harold Shipman. Anybody who can play that odious doctor AND Andy Capp with equal dedication and conviction gets my vote!
