That effectively kisses goodbye to broadcasting music of a certain once popular kind to the numerically diminishing pre-rock'n'roll demographic catered for by the old Light Programme, then.

Anyway, she's too old for the BBC - and Radio 2. (And Radio 3). I'm sure she'll enjoy the cameraderie of CFM.

Most of us here would agree that CFM has little musical appeal for us. But then, Radio 3's appeal diminishes steadily. And when it comes to those CFM 'gaffes', Radio 3 is an enthusiastic rival.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Moira Stuart, a very fine broadcaster. BBC R2's loss is Classic FM's gain. Probably seen as too old by BBC R2.

Been trying to work out the gist of this. "Music of a once popular kind" on the Light Programme makes me think of the Billy Cotton Band Show. I would have thought listeners favouring this style were not so much diminishing as deceased. I listened to the Light Prog as a child and teenager in the 50s and 60s and although I mainly relied on Radio Luxemburg and pirate stations we did at least have Pick of the Pops and Saturday Club on the Beeb.

I have not listened to Moira Stuart on Radio 2 so can't judge if her departure is a great loss. Her planned programme on CFM called Moira Stuart's Hall of Fame does not sound like one which would lure me away from R3

Not exactly - presumably there is a chance she will be replaced and they still have Clare Teal ....

Driving home for Christmas (no, not really) but on a 130 mile journey this evening we listened to CFM for a while and must have heard the most dire Christmas music ever:

              The 12 Days of Christmas
              Anon
              Conductor: Keith Lockhart
Ensemble: Boston Pops Orchestra, Tanglewood Festival Chorus
              Record label: Boston Pops Recordings
              Catalogue ID: BSYM 27

              It was truly dreadful!!

I don't think that the juxtaposing of "Stuart" and "Hall" is the wisest one the producers could have come up with.

Yes that pretty well sums it up in answer to gurney. Thanks ff.

...and by the BBC generally 60s Pop and rock is played less and less these days as their main presenters in their 40s and 50s are playing their preferred music. This has been very noticeable down here on Radio Cornwall. No classical and the Brass and MVC broadcasting seems to be being squeezed.

                        vocoder nonsense etc.,
Now that's a station worth the licence fee

I'm assuming it means Phase Vocoder as perfected by the brilliant Trevor Wishart ?

Well that diet in the right place is excellent - Linda Ronstadt doing most things is good and her Nelson Riddle CDs are among my top non-Classical choices, but on CFM? Not really appropriate, but to be honest thes artists are being continually failed by R2, which should be their home, and R2/6M is being overtaken by 80s and later sub-standard pop/rock and other unmentionable genres!

...and this had singers with live covers of chart music sung by Kathy Kay, Rose Brennan and Elvis’ dad, Ross McManus. Just googled and I’ve muddle my radio bands but the formula and era stands - Brennan and McManus were with Joe Loss and Alan Breeze was with Kay with Cotton!
All except Rose Brennan are deceased and photos of McManus back then show where Elvis got his good looks , including the specs!
(This post is evidence of how this forum leads to pointless googling to add to our mine of useless information).

Doesn't it just - but I've also learned (learnt?) a lot of more useful stuff.
