    Quicken 2004 on Windows 7

I thought I would post this just in case it might be useful for other people.

If anyone has been using Quicken 2004 to keep track of their personal finances and then find they can't install it on a new Windows 7 PC, don't despair - this is how to do it on Windows 7, 64 bit. (It might also apply to Windows 7, 32 bit.)

    - Create a new folder on your hard drive

    - Insert the Quicken 2004 installation CD but do not let it run (or alternatively exit from the installation programme).

    - Copy all the contents of the CD to the folder you created.

    - Find the "start.exe" file in the folder you created and copied the CD to.

    - Right click on "start.exe", select Properties, Compatibility Tab: "Run this programme is compatibility mode for: Windows XP, service pack 3"

    - Click on OK

    - Right click on "start.exe" again and select "Run as administrator" (very important)

The installation will then proceed without a hitch.

One word of warning: if you change your hardware after installing Quicken 2004 (e.g. installing a new card, etc) the software will require you to get authorisation to run on the changed hardware. This is impossible to get - so Quicken 2004 will no longer work. Uninstalling and reinstalling won't help as the uninstall leaves quite a few entries in the registry which the new install then finds and recognises.

If you think you might change the hardware of your PC the solution is to take a backup image of your hard drive before you install Quicken 2004 using something like Acronis True Image or Norton Ghost. Then if you change your hardware you can restore your PC to its state before you originally installed Quicken 2004.

Apologies if this seems totally irrelevant in this forum but it took me quite some time to arrive at a solution (the "solutions" found via google were little or no help). Also many people feel there is no equivalent replacement for Quicken 2004 after the software was withdrawn from the UK market some years ago.

    Missing DLL file

I seem to have installed Quicken 2004 into my Windows7 home premium OK, but when I click "RUN" I get the message "File MFC70.DLL not found". Can you help?

have you tried running it under Wine on a linux box eg Mint11 (all my old trustty and paid for windoze programs that locked me into the morass that Gates built seem to work )or in Virtual Macine mode assuming you have an XP install CD

Many thanks, johnb - potentially life-saving advice. I've pasted it into a word.doc in case I am ever forced into an upgrade. It's a shame that Intuit (Quicken) washed its hands of us.
