I promise if I were to live there I will re-read all his books, in order from Sketches by Boz onward, only occasionally leaving for fish and chips along the seaside. I spent a year at the University of Kent studying Dickens so I have a great fondness for this place. If only I had a great fortune too! Magwitch, where are ye? I'm waiting!

Actually, there's little shortage of properties (see link) with a claim to have been where the celebrated author laid his head. Off the top of MY head I know of memorials in High Holborn, Marylebone Road, Highgate and the Red Lion in Whitehall.

I have decided to work this peripatetic tendency to my advantage so that my one-bedroom flat is now on the the market with the proud boast that 'Charles Dickens never, h'ever slept here!'

I fancy buying Thomas Hardy's house if it's on the market. Broadstairs has bad memories of being sent to a 'convalescent home' at the age of 7, when the wise medics told my parents I would settle down better if they didn't visit me for a month. I thought I had been deserted. I'd had pneumonia, what a way to treat a small child.

The good news is, I DID WIN!!!!
