I think somewhere in the Young Musician discussion, some of the problems caused to a young person by being thrust onto the public stage too early were mentioned. I tend to get all the publicity about local music clubs and festivals here in the Southwest. I note that three local music societies with a radius of 20 miles have a concert in which Shaku is the principal artist. One wonders how much work this talented young chap is taking on nationawide. And abroad?

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Getting his name right might be a good idea?

Thanks for the list FF. Quite daunting in itself...but apart from the 2X Budleigh Salterton appearances, there are two other venues not mentioned.

              No problem

It's not a hard name to get right though
and I have fond memories of him as a 7 year old in student concerts with one of my offspring also playing the cello

I quite agree! If the name isn't right, doubt may legitimately be cast on the remaining content.

Perhaps - but when, as in this instance, "the remaining content" is then later substantiated by another Forumista ... ?

I don't know if anyone else listened to the European Young Musician semi-finals over the weekend, but it was certainly a world away from BBCYM. Brief introduction by Petroc, then music, three times in each of the hour long slots, 6 in total. It would have been nice to have seen the performers, but not being able to certainly ensured concentration on what was being played. Viewers in Scotland will be able to watch the Final, and I think there is some online option, but otherwise it's another listening event on R3 Friday 24th 2pm. I'm looking forward to it, not least because 2 of the performers whose recitals I most enjoyed are through. One of the finalists is something of a wild card possibly - a 16 year old double bass player who played just the one work in his recital - something he had composed. I'm assuming he hasn't written a concerto....but who knows?

There is precedent. Prokofiev won a competition playing his own concerto, and part of his motivation has been explained as "the judges won't know the music well enough or the intentions of the composer to be able to assess this!"

You can watch BBC2 Scotland live in England (and possibly elsewhere in the UK) on Freesat and Sky (Channel 970 in each case) and the final will of course be on iPlayer.
If you have Virgin TV, it's on Channel 102 if you choose Scotland as your location.

I heard a lot of this, or at least had it on . An interesting mish mash I thought, but really , R3 ought to ban PR puff pieces from contestants/ agents/parents/ whoever.

Although of course,PR is all part of the corporate identity these days.........

Great to see that the spelling/ typo police are still out in force up thread.

According to Petroc, the semi-final can also be seen via the BBC TV red button.
