I've said elsewhere that I get a bit fed up with this sort of programme [jealousy surely]....but this edition plus the next The Unthanks (lovely sounding sisters singing harmony) were very good.

One would have had to come across this programme by chance, as there's nothing in RT to recommend it to non-folkies. So thanks - or rather, unthanks - for drawing it to our attention, 8th.

Agreed! Back from the days when we had fascinating TV documentaries more often than now, I have kept some VHS tapes of programmes on Japan and its ways of life - contrasting for instance a village located in the north where a river has been canalised between and actually into the houses, where the householders keep coya carp, which clean the crockery and kitchen utensils, living dishwashers! The inhabitants basically live off the fish from the river, which they marinade in brine and rice for several months before consumption - the old fisherman was shown throwing surplus fish caught into the back of his boat for the local heron population. All this was contrasted with the inner city dwelling of one of Tokyo's top lawyers: a tiny room in the middle of what architecturally resembled a neatly stacked pile of boxes, fitted with pull out or pull down furniture and fixtures and a round porthole window. Where the Japanese and "western" cultures come together, in their modern-day arts and especially experimental and improvised music, I think we could find a lot to learn.

I do really wish I could see the appeal of the Unthanks. Everybody seems to love them.

As it goes, I was working at a rather good book launch at the Sidmouth Folk Festival a few years ago, with the inspirational Taffy Thomas.

Since it was a folky kind of vibe, a singer had been brought in, who I didn't recognise, but who turned out to be an Unthank.

Which was nice.
