Radio 3 breakfast late 80's questions

I started listening to Radio 3 in 1988 and used to wake up to it every weekday. I'll never forget the breakfast presenter's fabulous delivery and tone - measured and in equal parts academic and reassuring - I managed to form the impression that he was taken out of a velvet-lined mahogany box for the duration of the show and packed away at the end of it. Can anyone remind me of his name...?

Also, I seem to recall that before the schedule proper got underway they used to play the same piece of music every day as some sort of sound test. There would be a sequence of short tones, leading up to this music. Anyone remember it? I think it was some Bartok...

In 1988 it would still have been Morning Concert. Not unsurprisingly for those days, the BBC genome (Radio Times) doesn't seem to give the name of the presenter …

I would say that is a good description of Peter Barker's voice... but I'm just reminiscing now, as I don't know if that answers the question posed.

Tom Crowe retired from the BBC in 1982. Tony Scotland left (to join Classic FM) in 1992.
