Radio 3 breakfast late 80's questions

I started listening to Radio 3 in 1988 and used to wake up to it every weekday. I'll never forget the breakfast presenter's fabulous delivery and tone - measured and in equal parts academic and reassuring - I managed to form the impression that he was taken out of a velvet-lined mahogany box for the duration of the show and packed away at the end of it. Can anyone remind me of his name...?

Also, I seem to recall that before the schedule proper got underway they used to play the same piece of music every day as some sort of sound test. There would be a sequence of short tones, leading up to this music. Anyone remember it? I think it was some Bartok...

    PS - noob

Was it by any chance Peter Berg?

In 1988 it would still have been Morning Concert. Not unsurprisingly for those days, the BBC genome (Radio Times) doesn't seem to give the name of the presenter …

It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

          Yes - mid-'90s, IIRC.

I cannot answer your question I am afraid, but welcome to the forum, ronihado.

I first started listening to Morning on 3 late 1980s/early 90s when I became fed up of radio 4's Today for the duration of my morning commute. In those days Mo3 was presented by Penny Gore, she also of fabulous tone!

There was bit of chopping and changing in the late 80s early 90s. Mo3 was at first Penny Gore and Andrew McGregor on weekdays, with Humphrey Carpenter at the weekends when the schedule was rejigged.

I would say that is a good description of Peter Barker's voice... but I'm just reminiscing now, as I don't know if that answers the question posed.

Could it have been Tony Scotland? I also thought of Cormac Rigby, but I think he'd left Radio 3 earlier.

Father Rigby's voice was described as 'gentle and velvety-brown'; he resigned in 1985

Or might it have been Tom Crowe??

                          .

                            .
Tom Crowe retired from the BBC in 1982. Tony Scotland left (to join Classic FM) in 1992.

                              Anything here?
Three of the team stayed as ‘presenter-producers: Piers Burton-Page, Chris de Souza and Andrew Lyle; three remained as announcers: Penny Gore, Paul Guinery and Susan Sharpe; but three long-serving members were made redundant: Peter Barker, Tony Scotland and Malcolm Ruthven
                              OR
Wild Card: Paul Vaughan (something in linoleum)?
