My aunt used to make a seedy cake, a sort of sponge-type cake with caraway seeds. I think the adults preferred it more than the children.

Seed cake tends to be rather dry unless a madeira type mix is used. My mother discovered a way round this by adding a quantity of her marmalade - always available and cheaper than using the extra eggs and fat needed for the madeira version. More than one person was converted to liking seed cake by trying hers; quite a boost for her as she was not a particularly good cook, even on the infrequent occasions when she was permitted by the head of the household to use good ingredients.

It does read a bit strangely but I am sure that in writing it ff was keenly aware of the danger of writing I think the adults preferred it to the children instead!

As to seedcake - I've always loved the taste of caraway seeds, but I think they have fallen from favour. Having got used to caraway seeds in bread from bakers in North London with an East European influence and expecting to find lots of them in Poland, I was disappointed to find that they had gone out of fashion there too.
