No one needs a clock when they are listening to music (were you calibrating the tempi?). They might need it after a concert if, for example, catching public transport or meeting people, but why during a concert?

I agree with PMD that offenders during the music should be fined, I'm sure the same people wouldn't contemplate flash photography mid-concert.

A true story. I was at a concert and needed my phone on cause its also a clock. Ages before the music started I remembered the volume was on. So I turned the volume off. Unfortunatly its a very noisy process cause it bleeps at each volume as you scale it down to nothing.

The death threat looks I recieved! Erm, Im actually turning the volume off!!??
(Note. Still half an houer to go until the music)

I think this is a classic case of RTFM syndrome
like the people who complained that their phones had been "hacked" when they had failed to change the default settings

Why do you need to check the time during a concert anyway? And besides, there are devices called "wrist-watches" these days, a kind of miniature clock that straps to your wrist. Most of them are completely silent.

Nice to see so many regulars here from the Central Hall theatre in Chatham!

My volume on my phone is always off during concerts anyway. The phone clock was on probably due to that rush to the pub panic at the end! This was in the days when all pubs shut 11 pm. And that was if you was lucky!

Anyway. I'm agreeing with PMD here.
Talking of watches. Lost yet another one at the weekend!

I was at a concert at the Sage Gateshead tonight (albeit not classical - Leon Russell). Despite express announcements to the effect that photography was forbidden idiots had their mobile phones out flashing away. The ushers did tackle one or two, but then seemed to give up. AND despite there being acres of free seating at the back of the auditorium late comers were ushered past rows of already seated concert goers to their seats in the middle of the row - why??. I am afraid this is probably just a symptom of the modern era (though not a "yoof" phenomenon - the average age of the audience was probably 40/50!) and may well (God forbid) come to affect classical concerts in the future too.

I've been to art galleries where not only is photography forbidden, but you have to deposit any cameras before you go in. Perhaps the same should be done with mobile phones at concerts? Even if, say, doctors on call were allowed a phone or some sort of pager it would reduce the possibility of anything going off during the concert.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

My mobile phone went off in church last Sunday. (Bach, Sinfonia to Cantata 29) Fortunately, it was during a hymn so only my immediate neighbours in the choir were aware, but ten minutes previously I had been reading a lesson......
