Re the solution above - it'll probably work 90% of the time -....

I think you might be missing one key point about his system. It doesn't dribble out as it would under normal running conditions...a sure recipe for freezing..but comes out in one rush when the siphon kicks in. So hardly any opportunity to freeze.

Is an oxymoron ! I'm afraid that there is no such thing. It's the running costs that are the killer. How well insulated is your house ? How draughty is it?
