Things going on behind the scene. I think this rather moving although I still find it hard to watch the game seriously.
Ailsa Craig, a tiny, uninhabited island in the outer Firth of Clyde, provides the granite used in modern curling stones at all top-level competitions

... being granite, do they wear out? Friction on ice must be negligeable. In the which case, once each team/country has acquired all the curling-stones they require, surely the quarries/craftspeople producing the stones will be out of business...

I suppose other artifacts and items of crockery can be made from that stone, however. It buffs up beautifully.

How much more can Ailsa Craig give! Ban curling now whilst some of the rock remains.

Granite goes down quite a long way!

That reminds me of when I was a small boy, on holiday in Saltburn, complaining to my mum when she told me there would be opportunities for fossil collecting the next time we visited, "But supposing they've all been removed by then!"

... well they can probably survive, certainly for a time :

"Kays of Scotland has been making curling stones since 1851 and has the exclusive rights to the Ailsa Craig granite, granted by the Marquess of Ailsa. The last "harvest" of Ailsa Craig granite by Kays took place in 2013, after a hiatus of 11 years; 2,000 tonnes were harvested, sufficient to fill anticipated orders until at least 2020." [saith wiki]

And then they have their tomatoes

Tomato 'Ailsa Craig' seeds from Thompson & Morgan - experts in the garden since 1855

              and their onions

Onion 'Ailsa Craig' (Giant/Show Vegetable) seeds from Thompson & Morgan - experts in the garden since 1855

And did you know that Ailsa Craig had two separate railway systems?

              .

Well, I've grown the eponymous veg but had no idea about the railways, only ever having seen Paddy's Milestone as a distant hunk of rock, from the decks of various ferries.
The only curling rink I've seen is not that far away in Stranraer although I daresay Scotland has several others, but are there any in England, Wales or NI?

I must confess to having some sympathy for our women's bobsleigh team. First of all, their funding was withdrawn because of some kind of accounting cock-up in their national sporting body. Now I learn that they need to start practising their push starts (in Bath, this summer and seemingly for the next 4 years) because other countries field women's bobsleigh teams peopled by bigger women.

The Summer Olympics are much less silly than the Winter version.

                    Discus.

Should this not be on the Ripping Yarns thread?

Is that something to do with the pole vault ?
