As an affectionate reader of many years standing I am upset by the loss of this shining talent. Her novels for adults are quite exceptional.

For we have only what we know we must lose, what we are willing to lose… That selfhood which is our torment, and our treasure, and our humanity, does not endure. It changes it is gone, a wave on the sea. Would you have the sea grow still and the tides cease, to save one wave, to save yourself?”

I appreciated the Earthsea books but couldn’t say admired them, especially the later additions; they were too obviously Stories of The Chosen Ones. However, I greatly admired her as a critic and reviewer. Her passion for imagination, especially dragons, in fiction was a shining light in the pseudo realistic trend in fictions for children. A great loss. RIP.
