How disappointing to have many 'classic' episodes of Desert Island Discs archived without the music. Unless there is a legal reason for leaving out the music. The clue is in the title so I'm gobsmacked! Like this the programme just doesn't work for me. Bah humbug!

What do people think of current presenter Lauren Laverne?

I remember her as a rather dry and quirky presenter of 'indy' music programmes in the late 90s to early 2000s but I'm not keen on her now she's become more of a 'general' presenter. Listening to DiD with her at the helm, I have an awful suspicion that the castaways responded to the questions at home, then forwarded the responses to DiD, so LL could tape the questions separately.

I thought Kirsty McCloud was easily the best DiD presenter of all (Plomely was a bit too bland for my tastes). Sue Lawley was easily the worst.

I don't remember Parkinson, who wasn't on for long. John Fowles once hilariously described his impressions of Plomely as 'Tout vue. Tout parles. Tout interviewee.' Apologies for lack of accents (and grammar).

I remember the John Fowles programme - one of Plomley's pricklier customers - having chosen his 8 records Plomley asked which "just one" he would take. He replied the Goldberg Variations. RP objected that he hadn't already chosen it among his 8, and he replied that he wouldn't have wanted to listen to just a bit of it.

Fowles sounds utterly miserable. Having read his Diaries, he probably was.

I found the most chilling episode I ever heard was the one with Diana Mosley. Lawley a bright, genial interviewer but she certainly got her questions in. If you wanted to get inside the mind of such as DM, this was the way to do it - not the Paxman style. Psychologically, I found it fascinating and Lawley extremely skilful. But if you felt the woman should have been put through the mill, you might have found Lawley awful. But as a piece of history …

Indeed; I was, and still am, surprised - shocked - that such a repugnent person was given the opportunity to appear.

One episode was wiped when Roy Plomley discovered that he was talking to Alistair Maclean, the then Canadian tourism minister, and not Alistair Maclean the somewhat better known author.

I found her (Diana, the Hon. Lady Mosley) utterly charming, not repugnant and her DID choices were good, in my opinion - especially Act 3 of Die Walkure. Can't say the same about her politics though. But I think it's a good thing to have colourful characters on the programme, not just politically correct ones.

I meant 'repugnent' in that she was a supporter of Hitler. That, in my books is ample for me to judge as repugnent, regardless of her charm, or whatever, and music choices.
I will say no more on the matter, my opinion having being clearly made known.
