I've never been a fan of the programme. In such discussions as these I always remember that Frau Schwartzkopf chose eight of her own recordings. So did Jack Teagarden - I hope I've correctly remembered his name - jazz trombonist who I'd never heard of.

I am quite a fan of Private Passions, but that's another thread.

    OT, I know

      Oh, all right then:

      Schubert: Symphony no 8 in B minor D759, I

      The Beatles: She Loves You

Brahms: Clarinet Quintet in B mior Op 115, I

Bach: St Matthew Passion, final chorus, Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder

Otis Redding: Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay

Schubert: Piano Sonata in D flat major, D960, I

Mahler: Symphony no 9, IV Adagio

Messiaen: Quattuor pour la fin du temps: V Louange à l'Éternité de Jésus

Each has a story to tell... but only to me....

What I've learned is how hard an exercise this is.

This list is based on the items that would give me the most pleasure, at the exclusion of other items. RIP Jeremy Bentham.

Led Zeppelin II - Led Zeppelin
Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart
Never Mind The Bollocks - Sexy Pistols
The Valkyrie Act 3 - ENO, Sir Reginald Goodall
Dark Side Of The Moon - Pinky Floyd
          Bruckner 8 - VPO, Karajan
          Mahler 3 - SWR, Haitink
Vivaldi - Four Seasons, Il Giardino Armonico, Giovanni Antonini

Book: Diary Of A Nobody - George and Weedon Grossmith

          Luxury item: Swiss Army Knife

Yes - for it to be allowed, it would have to be in a display case with a bullet-proof/shatter-proof glass cover, so it could be looked at, but not used.

I thought about this a few years ago and these were my choices. I see no reason to change them now.

Wagner: Quintet from Die Meistersinger Act lll (soloists, BPO/Kempe)
Franck: Violin Sonata, especially the Canon (either Chung/Lupu or Perlman/Ashkenazy: both very different but equally valid)
Bruckner: especially the Adagio: Symphony 8 (VPO/Karajan)
                        Jacques Brel: Mathilde
Scott Walker: The Amorous Humphrey Plugg
Johnny Hartman (with John Coltrane): Lush Life
Messiaen: Quatuor pour le fin de temps (especially the last movement, which would be the perfect music to expire to): Hebrides Quartet
                        Richard Harris/Jimmy Webb: MacArthur Park

No rock and roll on my island: I could live wihtout r&r but not without orchestras/jazz/semi-kitsch. :)

Book: Of Human Bondage - W. Somerset Maugham

                        Luxury: Wriiting materials.

Ah yes. The comlete Oxford English Dictionary and supplements. About 16 volumes I should think. Might as well take plenty of reading material.

Luxury: writing materials (idea pinched from Conchis )

Apparently even that would be disallowed as 'useful'.

Yes - the criteria for what's defined as "practical" has changed over the presenters. IIRC, Roy Plomley once allowed someone to take a piano only on the strict understanding that they didn't shelter underneath it! (And Princess Margaret nearly had him sent to the Tower for not letting her take a cat.)

This TV programme in the BBC archive might be interesting/entertaining in light of this Thread:

First transmitted in 1982, Arena celebrates Roy Plomley's classic radio favourite, with the help of celebrity castaways, including Frankie Howerd, Arthur Askey and Paul McCartney.
