I really disagree with that. I did find her unbelievably lacking in self awareness, but it wasn't as if she was glorifying what the Nazis did. My point was that I didn't find her any more sympathetic as a person, but the way her mind (much like many others, no doubt) worked was psychologically illuminating. And, on topic, I was responding to the opinion that Lawley had been the "worst" presenter of DID. Delving into the psychology often uncovers the darker side of the human mind.

The BBC nowadays panders to the far right I am almost surprised we have not been asked to listen to the choices of Stephen Yaxley Lennon or Steve Bannon.

The left think the BBC panders to the far right, the right thinks it panders to the snowflake left. What are we sensible people in the middle supposed to do with all this? No wonder I don't buy a licence anymore!

I apologise for posting a comment which led to something of an off-topic topic. But the most recent comments reminded me of an article in today's Atlantic:

"This is also a big part of why people don’t trust the media. Not that news articles are never biased, but a hypothetical perfectly evenhanded piece of journalism, that fairly and neutrally represented all sides would still likely be seen as biased by people on each side. Because, Manjoo writes, everyone thinks their side has the best evidence, and therefore if the article were truly objective, it would have emphasized their side more."

A probably sad - but real pleasure - is to listen to the DID archive (downloaded or, these days, streamed) while driving. I have vivid memories of Roy Plomley and the über-plummy (and über not-very-interesting) Margaret Lockwood, while driving through rural Oregon. A million miles away from where the programme is now (and probably no bad thing that it has tried to keep up with the time in that slightly cringe-making BBC way). But I want to jump to the defence of Sue "Hockey Captain" Lawley. When she clearly didn't hit it off with the guest (try 'Alice Thomas Ellis', as in Anna Haycraft), handbags at dawn. And when she did (Daniel Barenboim in shamelessly flirty mode), it could be quite entertaining (why do I remember driving along the A5 through North Wales?). Anyway, she wasn't that bad, although Kirsty Young was/is just a touch better (Morrissey a classic). But, come the revolution, it should all really be swept away .....

Well - apart from just one edition, of course.

It’s not clear to me where HD thinks this revolution will be happening.

Be a brave person who would bet on which of the current UK countries will get there first.

Interesting summary of the basic ideas. I enjoyed reading it. Thanks.

I'd have to read that, but my theory is that a lot of people opt out of further debate once they realise they're position is non-substantiated, and go into a defensive posture of denial.

As long as the BBC continues to be attacked with equal enthusiasm by right and left, we can rest assured that it'd getting it about right - sorry, correct!

Except that we all know that the apparent attacks from the right really come from leftist agents provocateurs, innit?.

'You may very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment'.

Lawley seemed to have zero interest in, or rapport with her castaways, whoever they were.

The Diana Mosley interview is useful for illustrating the mindset of a certain type of upper-middle class inter-war personage and I have rather more respect for D.M. for speaking honestly of her feelings for A.H. rather than refusing to discuss him at all. It's a fact that most of the people who knew A.H. personally (including his pre-putsch Jewish Munich landlady) seem to have rather liked him.

Is Kirsty Young's departure permanent, or only temporary?
