As to the current status, I shall have to consult TS jnr no 2, currently residing in a shared house of young professionals( or so it said on the blurb) in Denzil Avenue, by a crazy coincidence the self same street I lived in back in the day.
Derby Road of course is the most notorious , and I doubt much has changed. Certainly back in the early 80s, Mrs TS had to be accompanied to the phone box on the corner of Cranbury Avenue and Denzil for her Friday night call to the folks back home. And the local working girls were often in evidence.
An interesting place to live. Some sort of incident most weeks.....

( I don't recall what the postal service was like, presumably a sign of the sort smooth efficiency that too often goes sadly unnoticed).
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

Yes, this Sunday 25th November 2018, the Sunday next before Advent.

“Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen“

Wonderful. I always feel a comforting warm glow inside when that BCP collect is read in the cathedral, nowadays before the dismissal (due to the Common Worship collect having been used earlier in the morning Eucharist) and, even better, in its rightful place at Evensong.

We found a well-matured Christmas pudding from last year at the back of a kitchen cupboard, sadly obviating the need for any further stirring this Sunday. There may instead be a token stirring of the teaspoon or two of water into my single malt.

            Advent Sunday is 2 December.

I'm lucky enough to be going to the Advent Procession service in King's Chapel, Cambridge which is this Sunday, 25th, due to term ending the following week.

For the same reason, St John's have their Advent carol service this weekend - twice: one on Saturday presumably as a sort of dress rehearsal for the Sunday repeat which is recorded by Radio 3 for transmission a week later, on Advent Sunday itself....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
            Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

That sounds good Cali! I’d love to go there one day.

MrsBBM has ordered all the ingredients she needs for the recipe for Christmas Pudding, that she’ll mine making this year. Stir up Sunday will be happening in this house on this coming Sunday!

Was it ever thus? Although Full Term ends on Friday 30th November, the back row of the choir might have been expected to stay on for a couple of days in order to have their Advent Procession on Advent Sunday. Their concert at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam isn’t until 11th December. Are they planning to hold A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols before the end of term?

                  In a stirrup cup, perhaps?

Very good! Maybe ok for non-vintage port ‘afore ye go’, but a single malt of sufficient age requires a properly shaped glass!

I think the point is that the Advent services are principally for the benefit of members of the college and University, so have always been held during full term time. Yes, the singers themselves remain busy till Christmas day (I think they only have one day off during December).

The FNLC is for the wider world so not held to term time dates....

Fair enough. Thanks for the clarification.

I wish there were also a FNLC from St John’s in addition to their much-loved Advent service, but their choristers are no doubt enjoying delicious home cooking and dad’s wine cellar by then.

Bach's cantata 140 (Wachet auf) appears to be designated for the 27th Sunday after Trinity, an occasion that happens relatively infrequently.
Does it traditionally get 'bumped' to Stir-up Sunday, the Sunday next before Advent?

We're planning to attend the Advent Carol Service at Truro Cathedral, a tremendous joy to hear such wonderful singing and playing. Other cathedrals are available.

I always thought Stir-up Sunday was something invented by The Archers.

Should I feel virtuous, or otherwise, having made my cakes a week early? (Delia Smith, whose recipe I use, says they should be doused "at odd intervals" with brandy. I wonder if twice a day would be odd enough.

That would be odd because it’s even.

It depends whether it’s Three Barrels or Rémy Martin.
