    Rosemary Leach is Dead. 81.

The actress has died after a 'short illness' according to the BBC.

She seemed to be bounced into matronly, grandmother type roles while barely out of her thirties.

But older viewers (not me) might remember her sexually charged performances as Parick Wymark's mistress in The Power Game and (especiallly) as Marcelle in the BBC's 1970 dramatisation of Sartre's Roads To Freedom.

The latter has not been shown on television since 1976. There are no plans to release it on DVD. Bar a freak re-showing at the BFI in 2012, there seems to be a conspiracy of silence about it.

Yet it seems to have made a huge impression on EVERYONE who saw it in the 70s (including a few people on this forum, I'll be bound).

So - maybe now is the time for a re-showing, or DVD release, as a tribute to RL....

Why won't the BBC show The Roads to Freedom? Discussion of 1970s BBC2 drama series The Roads to Freedom based on the novels by Jean Paul Sartre. Mentions of actors Michael Bryant, Daniel Massey, Georgia Brown. Director James Cellan Jones.

My memory of her is primarily as Aunt Fenny in Jewel in the crown: she seemed perfect in that role.
I'm actually amazed (and shocked) that she was younger than me!

PS: I either misread the age or it's been corrected.
I could have sworn it originally said 61 not 81.
    That makes more sense.

I'd forgotten her role as Mrs Honeychurch in Room with a view, specifically mentioned and pictured in her obituary in The Times today (Monday).

I can confirm that. There are certain scenes which I still recall vividly. I'd love to see this again.

My memory of her as well. Plus quite a number of TV roles the names of which escape me. She had such a clear and distinctive voice.

She was wonderful in the charming Cider with Rosie, shown in 1971.

I share your memories of her in the 1960's and 70's. Roads to Freedom was strikingly good and it would indeed be a fitting memorial to her and to the other fine actors involved, Daniel Massey and Georgia Brown spring to mind.

I'm afraid I don't remember RTF - having been only 3 when it was first broadcast (and 9 at the time of its only repeat). But I never stop hearing bout it from those who saw it.
