I did a PGCE in 1971-2. There was much talk about deschooling society, prompted by a new book of that name by Ivan Illich. Good radical stuff. Not a lot seems to have come of it over the last 50 years.

Yes, and there were the books by John C. Holt, too, "How Children Fail", etc. So much clean water (since full of pollution) under the bridge.

Education's fundamental purpose is to produce functionally literate and numerate adults but it still often fails at this task.

That's training. Education has rather higher aims. Sadly, training has been more and more paraded as education in recent decades.

              I agree.

I wd suggest 'education' shd be about encouraging the child's curiosity, and nudging them towards how they might find answers and/or different better questions

...online is pretty good at offering 'answers' : it's less good at nudging people towards thinking of alternative/better questions/approaches. For that I still think a human bean is needed...

Indeed, and one with a pulse. (I'll get me coat.)

Apart from ps and qs I have just been reading this encouraging report:

Pupils from St Joseph's and Blackmountain Primary School premiere their film at City Hall.

I would class it 'excellent work'.

It's always good if local interest can be used to such an effect.
I'm horrified by how few kids in the primary school where I help out have actually been inside York Minster!

That said, last term's and this term's Y5 Literacy/Guided Reading has been fascinating for them (and me!).
Tutankhamen (100 years since discovery of tomb): learning about Ancient Egyptian civilisation as well as discussing the morals of taking artefacts to display elsewhere.
Climbing of Everest (news released on QE2's coronation 70 years ago): learning about the dangers and hopes of the expedition.
In each case, the topic has led them to explore other aspects too (such as geography/River Nile/irrigation and working as a team).
