I was trying to draw a distinction between the amount of money he had himself raised over the years through participating in charity events, and his duties as a particular charity's director of funding which I would have thought consisted of quite different duties. Were his organisational skills not up to the job? It seems as if the charity was claiming that, overall, the marathon attempt incurred losses. You don't employ someone to enter marathons for you, so what had he actually done over the past eight months?
