I suppose that the internet, growth of numerous forums [fora?], and platforms such as facebook, has reinforced the iconoclasm which I think of as a product of sixties counter-culture.... I think in my youth, referring to the A of C as a twit would have been regarded as close to blasphemy (and that in itself is not a word/concept any longer in common use).

And a very good Sunday morning to al!

Sorry, what have Ian Humphries and co. got to do with this? (We are posting on the Radio 3 Forum, after all.)
It's a reference to the famous piece by Harry composed for the first night of the Proms a few years ago.

First night? Are you not Panning from one end to the other?

To be clear, as a Non British, Non Anglican, I had no idea, as I sat, sleep deprived, in a Frankfurt airport gate making that post, so I am sorry if I gave offense (However, my sentiments towards all Organized Religion, including my own, were as previously stated). Incidentally, I once shook hands with the AB of C a few years ago; I have a Sister in Law who is essentially a fund raiser for the Manhatten Diocese of the Episcopal Church and we were at a reception featuring him and some celebrities, about 7 years ago, so not sure it would have been the same chap? I have to say that it was more memorable to me for the few moments that I was able to chat with Meryl Streep, and also memorable for the donation that my relative was able to extract from us...No Atheists in a fox hole, or at a Charity Fundraiser either...the Diocese was raising money for a soup kitchen in Harlem so I should stop kvetching...
And a happy Yom Kippur to you, MGG

The Internet has been cited as a principal factor in the polarization of American Politics. Politicians on either side are monitored in real time, and any sign that they may even be talking with members of the other side is immediately reported on the net and the most fervent activists immediately begin denunciations, and no compromises are ever reached.
There may be some truth to that, but similar polarizations have occurred in previous times, such as the years leading up to the American Civil War, between the pro and Anti Slavery forces. Worryingly, that situation didn't end very well.
What is interesting to me is how the Russians and the Chinese have been able to control the content on the Net. 20 years ago the prediction was that the free flow of information was necessary to modernize their economies, and that the political liberalization would follow as the net would enlighten everyone and Jeffersonian Democracy would triumph everywhere.

                Hello, KB,

The plural of forum is surely forums - unless you want to demonstrate a classical education.

Referring to anyone as a twit is childish. We should all be able to say why we consider them so. However, treating criticism of the A of C as near-blasphemy (and I agree there was a time...) is ridiculous, and it only serves to demonstrate the awfulness of such a thought-crime. Can't wait till Ireland repeals their blasphemy laws - the last in Europe.

I feel the stirrings of the discussion we had on this forum about evolution - heady days!

                  I couldn't possibly comment...

I hope you've survived the weather over there.

Is that the one that started with a discussion of the trinity? I still have a hard copy of that which I printed off

PS, and OT, I had a email of news from a former colleague, who had the following experience, in a part of the UK which you can probably guess:

"[my guided walk, with XXXXXX High School] ended with me being told by the teacher, that some of them only believed in Creation, after I had been discussing the geological origins of the pebbles on the beach."

Yes we're fine. I've been absent because I've been writing a book on George Butterworth. Don't you feel excited?

He said inter alia that social media sites had created "self-reinforcing bubbles of like-minded people". Are we [i.e. our Forum] one of those? And does it matter?
The title of the thread, and the bit of the OP which quoted it (above), don't seem to imply that the identity of the person who uttered the words had any relevance - simply the idea being expressed. It was a 'Discuss' topic, wasn't it?

I don't know what JW had in mind. What immediately came to mind was my niece's recent wedding, with a reception for 100 people. About 15-20 were family, from both sides; the rest were friends of the young people. I have never had that many 'friends' in my entire long life, and they had only just reached 30. I could only think that the accumulated wealth of friendship must have been amassed by a network of friends, and their friends, and the friends of friends, via the enhanced communication of Facebook and any number of other social media sites. And in particular it becomes obvious that they share a culture between them which I don't share. And I did have the slighly uncomfortable feeling of being temporarily in their 'bubble', and out of mine.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
