I took it he was referring to social media, with the emphasis on the purely social. The groups of friends who come together in the first place because they enjoy each other's company, share similar views, do similar things, have similar lifestyles. People value communicating with each other, keeping in touch wherever they go, "sharing" music, pictures, news &c.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Dunno, I didn't hear what he said. I was going by the OP. Narrow interest groups all become 'bubbles' in their way, whether 'virtual' or 'flesh-and'blood.

C'mon - somebody wants to do the obvious one ... just don't make it too Blue.
It would mark the end of the line - no heirs to fortune(or anything else....)

Quite. Someone who has devoted at least the latter part of his life to something that may, or may not, exist. The thought prompted by reading a fascinating article in today's Times Magazine by Catherine Nixey, whose parents were an ex-monk and an ex-nun. I'm just about to start her well-reviewed book "The Darkening Age - the Christian destruction of the Classical World". If anyone knows about self-reinforcing bubbles, Welby should. I won't be in church tomorrow, I'll be too busy listening to Sarah Walker

Aha! The Archbishop of Canterbury! Are there not self-reinforcing bubbles of like-minded people in the Church of England an institution that some may describe as one itself!

The Internet has changed Modern Living. Not all of the developments are for the better,
No indeed, Rich, but by far the most harmful effect on youngsters, especially adolescents, can be the instant and ever-present communication with each other. It may not be bullying as such, but it's often about not living up to some expectation of appearance, being in the right social set, etc, etc. It is generally thought to be the reason for the huge rise in mental health problems...more so in girls than boys. I've seen it very close to home, sadly.

Well as I am a long time atheist, the title only reinforces my opinion. RT stated it more elegantly

There really is a problem with the level of music education with those on the "right" of politics
don't they recognise a Smiths reference when they see it?

[This risks taking us very much off topic - I don't think I will proceed with my intended response ]
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Sorry, what have Ian Humphries and co. got to do with this? (We are posting on the Radio 3 Forum, after all.)
