Deeply sad to read about the death of the shimmering soprano, Barbara Cook. I recall budgeting for her LP recording of The Music Man in the late 50s, as Marian, the librarian, opposite the dynamic Robert Preston in the title role. Alas, neither performed in the 1960 London production but she became an instant Broadway ingenue and I still enjoy listening to her ringing tones as she sang a memorable duet, Till There Was You. She scored further successes in Candide and She Loves Me and performed regularly in cabaret and one-woman shows for several decades but seemed to by-pass London unless I missed a trick! I have several of her CD recordings on the shelves and have just noted that she performed on a Mainly Sondheim DVD in 2003 - again, I missed the boat but have just ordered a copy. I'll always remember the London performances of Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald and Marlene Dietrich and wish that I'd been able to include the great Barbara Cook, bless 'er. RIP
