Thanks, Freddie, the jury's out ...
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

"... republicans supposed to be democratic ...?"

In a democracy, dissenting voices are allowed, even those of republicans who object to the voicing of dissent.

But in a republic, will the dissenting voices of democracy be allowed?

I know where I'd rather live. I dont want my hands on the levers of power. Neither do I want to be denied access to those that wield them.

There's a great quote by Voltaire, which I cant immediately find, but it goes something like this: 'I disagree with all the things you say, and I defend to the death your right to say them."

In a democracy, that right will prevail.

In a republic, I doubt it. Security, old chap, security above all. The leaders wont tolerate dissention among the ranks, what? Sure you'll understand, dont want to mention it again ...
I think you'd better go back to a dictionary (or Wikipedia) & learn what 'democracy' and 'republic' mean. A republic, with an elected president, is more democratic than a monarchy, as we can't decide who will be the monarch.

so we can't vote kate out and pippa in then, (for example), if we get bored or we think the health service is a shambles?
i think we have been badly misled...

Does it make any difference that this woman is fifth in line to the throne?

That we could be ruled by one of the Teletubbies.

for all the good that the royalty, aristocracy, the bankers and their hangers on do, we might as well be. In fact, they would be cheaper, probably better at the job, and would keep the little ones entertained while us commoners are down the pub, or watching the footy.

Not a scrap ... minor Royals have always entertained us.

Republicans prattle on about 'the people' and 'democracy'. Everyone knows that 'the people' wish to retain the monarchy which is why these same 'democratic' republicans never demand a referendum on the issue.

                      Talk about lost causes !

i should think republicans would love a referendum..but they certainly won't be allowed one.
If they ever got one the whole huge , overwhelming power of the established hierarchy would be ranged against them, so success would indeed be unlikely.
Its not really surprising that so many people at the bottom end of society accept the status quo when you compare the money spent on their education and needs, with that spent on the top few percent.
I can still hope that my kids can one day live in a country where the interests of the working majority take precedence over the interests of a useless pampered and idle minority.

Well, by degrees would be better than nothing I suppose!!
not a Trot, just someone really tired of seeing the tough lives of the many paying for the indulgences of the few.
                            The world turned upside down..............

No doubt if there was a referendum it would suffer the same fate as the AV referendum - the 'no' camp would flood the media with lies & specious arguments (cf the post opposing 'democracy' & 'republic'); the funding for any campaign would be seriously unbalanced - Charlie for one would be pouring millions into the 'no' campaign, along with all the assorted aristocracy whose legitimacy depends on the monarchy.
