Oh, absolutely. Nothing like a quick blast on the loud bassoon to scare the enemy.

Actually, Mary, you may well have a point..... Joshua at Jericho, and more recently Scottish pipers put the fear of death into the enemy.

An idle search in wikipedia reveals the fascinating fact that the troopers are wearing black bears but the officers brown bears died black. An experiment a few years back with synthetic ones apparently reckoned without static, the men resembled bottle brushes according to a military source quoted at the time.

I'm not clear whether the bears are shot specially, to order, or whether the skins are the by-product of a culling programme that happens anyway. Or, how many bearskins it takes to make one, er, bearskin.

...Well Manmgerton etc-Take it from one who has served in the Guards for six years. Firstly Soldiers are drilled to attain the required discipline needed in battle situations such as Afghanistan & Iraq. They need to be able to obey without question,as others lives will depend on this. Re Mounted Bands-not wanting to put too fine a point on it- but Bassoons,Oboes,Horns are TOO dangerous on horseback since(if the horse throws his head backwards)the crook/reed may go straight through the back of the neck! Likewise Horns embrochure can be ruined. So Wiki HAVE GOT IT WRONG!

I'm surprised trombones don't fall into that dangerous category, but they were being played yesterday

I didn't watch it. Was it all that different from last year, then? Or the year before??

Well since he served in the Royal Navy for much of WWII, yes he has seen a fair amount of action. From memory he was Mentioned in Despatches at least during the course of the war.

...Well It's a Clarinet-which(like most on Horseback)have to be Played to one side(my left)in case the Horse throws his head backwards! Rather amusingly, the Horse dictates when one can Play-for if he ducks his head the Instrument is forced out of your mouth!(Reins tied in a knot over right wrist)LOL
