Sad news indeed. Good on jazz, and he started the round ball thread which has bonded a few board members and their respective teams. R.I.P. Calum

I am very sorry to hear the sad news about Calum da Jazbo.
That's a name that has memories for all of us - and with a rhythm that swings!
I remember he loved the Benny Goodman small groups, with a particular admiration for the piano playing of Teddy Wilson.

I never talked much to Calum about classical music, though I remember his expressing a dislike of Schoenberg's.
I once sent him this link to Darius Milhaud's second violin sonata, mentioning in passing that he had taught Brubeck, and he messaged me back saying how much he loved it. Milhaud's penchant for polytonal harmonies didn't always work, but here it worked a kind of magic, especially in the slow movement, starting at 9'30", and I'd like to post this in fond memory.

Such very sad news. I always enjoyed his excellent posts, and a few discussions I had with him, all on the main forum.
He always seemed to have a bit of a "human" handle on business matters, and 8O's lovely words make clear why.
He's been greatly missed on the board.
RIP

A couple of short points.
1. It is such a shame that we were not able to do this thread while he was still able to read it.
2. A fitting tribute to his legacy is the way in which the standard has been kept so high by s-a.
Gratitude all round!
If we all crawl to winter, and after much procrastination, I really do have this one earmarked as my proper jazz immersion rather than fluttering and faffing around. I've made big strides on classical music in the past two years and this is now the way the wind is intended to blow, But I will need a real steer across the waters. Just to flag it up - you have been warned!!!!Last edited by Lat-Literal; 14-07-17, 23:44.

Calum was one of the genuine 'characters' of the old and current forums. I have to first confess I was somewhat bewildered by quite a few of his posts due to his individualistic writing style but was always fascinated and greatly intrigued by them. I did sort of get the general sense though we didn't exactly share similar views on one or two things about life.
I have often wondered what had happened to him but someone here did mention he was unwell some time ago. Calum always came across to me here as a thoroughly decent and intelligent guy and because he was so unique on this forum, quite irreplaceable.
