It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

How kind. I think the secret is that I see the words, but not always what they mean - which explains the topological substitutions. The other possibility, and that offered by Mme. M,, is that I have the sense of humour of a schoolboy*, which also means some of my efforts are not really suitable for public consumption. (There is, near Rouen, a village with such a splendid name when read by the English that I am surprised there are not charabanc tours to take photographs of the sign. I cannot think of it without smiling. Mme M. sniffs à la Parisienne (not like the bread) and rolls her eyes towards the ceiling). I hope you realize what a wonderful language you have, for the purposes of comedy.

                          *and he'd like it back.

I think that should be declared the winner, both for appositeness to Britain, and wit.
