    Midsummer

Seasonal best wishes to all...best not to let grey grimness win just now.

And thanks for all the entertainment, musical above all but also all the rest of your insights and smiles.

And a thooper thummer tholthtice to you, too, greenilex - and all Forumistas, of course. For this bit of the country, sunrise and sunset times for today are 4:35 and 21:43 respectively - tomorrow they're 4:36 and 21:43, so yes, this year the Solstice is one of those a little earlier than the 21st, and the nights will start to draw in from tomorrow.

Interestingly, posters on a weather enthusiasts' site are pointing out that nights in all parts of the UK at this time of the year, even on the south coast, are never totally dark. There is always a glimmer of light visible on the northern horizon, though obviously the amount of light is affected by cloud cover, and over urban areas such as here, light pollution.

Best of luck there, Alain: I see it's even hotter on your side of La Manche!

A pleasant 35 at the moment, which is why my west-facing shutters are tightly closed. Storms possible this evening, which is a pity because I like to watch the sunset - the most northerly of the year tonight (although I enjoy a good electric storm.). A cooler 34 tomorrow.

I understand the importance is not which day is the shorter, but that tonight is the shortest night.

I'll be celebrating by seeing one of my favourite bands ( back in the day), and one that I never saw. A bit suspicious of these 40 year reunion tours, but seize the moment.

This concert set me thinking a little. The band in question had a few hits, and made a splash at the time, but their " career" never really took off, and petered out. Although I absolutely loved this band, nobody else in my sphere seemed to . So they have always been a bit of a solitary pleasure ( no sniggering) for me. I never really shared this music much with anybody, and I'll be at the gig on my own , which I often do anyway. But I'm almost of a mind that I don't want to share this , as , although it sounds a bit selfish,it would almost go against the grain of how I have enjoyed their music. I just wondered if others feel the same way about particular music? I don't mean that I don't want to share the music, just perhaps not this particular experience of it.

Although, if any forum members find their way to the 1865 in Southampton tomorrow night, I'll buy them a pint.

Oh, and just for the record, Mrs TS adores midsummer, ( being, like me, a Capricorn) but is otherwise engaged tomorrow night, so we'll celebrate at lunchtime.
I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

There always seems to be confusion over the longest day and Midsummer's Day. The former is June 21 while the latter is June 24 - easy enough to remember for those here as June 24 is St John's Day, Johannestag in Die Meistersinger.

When, however, thinking of Mendelssohn, is Midsummer's Night? Is it the night of June 23 or June 24? I'm never quite sure.

And note a lovely reminiscence of Mendelssohn's MSND Nocturne in the Act 3 Prelude to Die Meistersinger.

I would apply the same logic as I do to Christmas. Hence June 23 would be Midsummer Eve and Midsummer night would be on the 24th. Then that's just me, you decide. I'll just reach for my Maag recording of the MND Inc Mus.
Oh and the longest day is sometimes the 22nd!

Ah, I knew that as well. That's ojk then. Now as the weather is a trifle at the moment, I always like music of a summery kind. Do other members feel this as well?

Has Mrs BBM been too liberal with the sherry bottle?
Or have you been at the real ale again?
                              A trifle too hot/sticky.....?

Canteloupe (sic) and Songs of the Auvergne always seem to suit this sort of weather, though in fact it is much cooler up here today, and very grey/overcast; bring on the rain!
