Well it isn't the real thing but even so I did a double take looking out of he window this morning. A sharp frost working I assume on what the freezing fog laid down had coated everything in a white coat, glistening in the sun. The thermometer by the back door reckons it was about +1 minimum - which I'll ignore as the waterfilled dish beside it has well over an inch of ice in it. The basic plant protection I did yesterday was not enough so I fear there may be casualties, and further damage to delaminated clay pots is inevitable.

Well, here we are. Hogmanay in the Scottish Highlands and a couple has just driven past in an open tourer! Pushing it a tiny bit, I think, but it is certainly warmish for the time of year.Money can't buy you happiness............but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery - Spike Milligan

This has to be the first time ever, or within living memory, that the weather pattern has stayed exactly the same on each side of Christmas Day. Normally either it's cold up to a couple of days beforehand - a thaw having set in to ensure no white Xmas, or the day itself is mild - dry or rainy - and then it turns colder on Boxing Day or shortly thereafter.

Yes - a very mild, "October-ish" week here in this bit of the Pennines, with temperatures in double figures, and only an occasional gust of breeze to remind us it's nearly January. Today I've got the windows ajar to let the fresh air into the house ready for the New Year. Set to plummet tomorrow evening - but recovering by the end of the weekend.Numquam Satis!

Very mild again today. After an indeterminate start the sun broke through at midday and the afternoon has been pale blue sky with varying amounts of pretty, crumbled cloud. Forecast is indeed for chillier conditions ahead but so long as it stays dry I can get on with garden related things to help offset grey skies.

Much brighter than had been expected from the forecast, although a short rain spat late morning. Cooler, with a rather raw feel to the wind, but not particularly a problem so long as neck and hands are wrapped up to stop drafts under a warm jacket. Some dark grey lumps of cloud around which may or may not come to something - going out to do gardening will probably determine which....
