We see far too little of what you once called "that big yellow thing in the sky".... I often think of it as the BFL - Big Friendly Lion...
I think it’s the contrast from the magnificent blue skies we had during the heatwave. The blues against the greys!

It was certainly raining cats and dogs in the end, well towards the end of the morning! Wonder what today will bring.

It looks like we're all in for a pleasant weekend, with the possible exceptions of western Scotland, N Ireland and Cornwall. Having "done" the Ravensbourne Riverside Walk, from Greenwich to Beckenham, this morning, enjoying en route the exceptionally plentiful supply of blackberries freely on offer this year - the one good thing about brambles! - I intend to do the wander through the area of the law courts tomorrow, parking the bike by Victoria Embankment Gardens, where I ended the walk last year with a reasonably-priced and very tasty lunch at the Italian-run outdoor restaurant ensconced among the plane trees, and making my way up through the Inner Temple, past the Royal Courts of Justice, and through Lincoln Inn Fields, ending up at High Holborne, then making my way back via Foyles in Charing Cross Road, if I've still got the energy. I did this journey on foot a year ago - every one who is London-born, such as me, should feel duty-bound to: it is a part of London full of history and character, some of the buildings having survived The Great Fire of 1666, if one knows where to look for them; to think that I reached the age of 71 years before discovering the district! On Saturday the Lambeth History Fair takes place for most of the day at The Omnibus, an arts centre/museum located in Clapham, which looks interesting!

I keep wondering if you ever read the Michael Frayn novel of that title, BBm...

To Hell with that. I'm off for a few days on the beach while the good times return.

The weather will, of course, greatly improve next week - the school holidays end this week.

We have some wonderful autumn weather . I really can't be doing with all that September 1st grumbling.

Can't beat a beautiful sunny autumn Saturday.

I feel a trip to Lee on Solent coming on.

Haha! No, I’ve never heard of it even. Literature has never been my strong point!

Not a bad day in the end. Today looks as though it’s going to be a good one too.

It looked threatening at eleven when I took off on the bike, with clouds piling up all around; but I'd decided to chance it, and in the end all turned out well, because a cap prevented the convection from breaking through and bringing showers. Once off the main thoroughfares, for all its commerciality central London is remarkably quiet, with many of the original narrow streets now separating giant glass boxes pedestrianised, and the older tranquil corners of Lincoln's Inn with fountains and overhanging trees favoured places for lunchtime snacks.

Sunny, cloudless with a nice breeze here today.

Looks like that by Sunday temperatures could reach 27C!

Well they were nowhere near that around here! Since when it has been pretty dull across London, and today is stiflingly humid, making it feel much warmer than the actual 20 degs. C maximum registered on my thermometer.

Slightly off-topic as regards Britain, I can't help having noticed how the northern part of Spain has been continuously subject to widespread intense thunderstorms these past couple of days: I wonder if this will get any mention in the news. Here meanwhile it appears set for rain across much of Scotland, Wales and the NW from tomorrow until the weekend, with daytime temperatures everywhere falling quite a bit lower than they have been for much of the summer, but hopefully recovering somewhat on Sunday, here in the south at any rate.

I must get out onto that lawn out there, to soak in some of that free Vitamin D, before it's too late...

And by the way, Vitamin C is especially plentiful in supply this year, courtesy free from those otherwise pesky brambles all around. What will become of them when all the spare brownfield sites still going have been built upon?
