I'm currently tracking an intense storm crossing where Lat lives - some of the most well-developed shelf and wall clouds I have ever seen in this country - conditions making for large hailstones and powerful gust fronts; mostly cloud-to-ground lightning, about two flashes per minute.

        Hope you're OK there, Lat!

Yes, thank you, we got it and with lightning but it was so short. I would estimate it was no more than 15 minutes. We don't seem to get much rain lasting several hours these days.

            That's a relief anyway!

                Hope you’ll be safe!

I have to go to a funeral of a friend today. I think he’s going to have the last laugh on us!

As it happened, a thunderstorm broke just as we were leaving the crematorium at my father's funeral in January 2001 - mourners told me it was because he would have disapproved of my choice of the music!

Huge deluge just before midday here earlier; and I can now see thunderstorms looming up from the SW, just inside the M25 at Sunbury, which will be here in about the next half hour, I guess. Lovely brilliant white puffy cumulonimbus clouds showing up, with long, very dark bases to the north.

Edit: I now see a new storm has broken over Cali's district - bright lightning nearly made me fall off my chair! The way the cloud transformed from large cauliflour to something resembling an atomic mushroom cloud in a few minutes was astonishing, indicating huge temperature contrasts between air still lingering in the city's "heat island" and the much colder airstream flooding across from the west at Everest altitude.

Thunderstorm now directly overhead here - visibility down to a couple of hundred metres. Rain gutters turned into Niagara Falls!

Just returned from a walk where my brolly had to endure lots of hail and rain, and strong wind. It started with periodic gunshots of thunder...

So it's been up and down the country, to some extent then. No hail here, but I wouldn't mind betting a good inch of measurable rain in the two 15-minute downpours we had earlier.

No thunder here, just rain almost continuously from mid-morning yesterday to mid afternoon today. Temperature struggled to get to about 16 today so distinctly chilly out. Should be a bit warmer tomorrow apparently.

Wet norrible this morning, bright and breezy now.
Might use tomorrows dry cool forecast to do repairs on the shed, and give it a lick of paint.

                            I know, thrilling, isn’t it ?

W had one of those and the heavens opened, just as we came out of the church! I’m sure that was my mate having the last laugh!

I lived opposite a cemetery for nearly 25 years and it was uncanny how often a leaky black cloud would appear in the middle of a blue sky at about 2-30pm. Two particularly memorable meteorological accompaniments were the sudden increase in wind speed and turbulence one autumn morning which rearranged clergy clothing, mourners' hats and some of the floral tributes, and the mini-blizzard that erupted one bitter winter's afternoon as all were gathered beside the grave, that turned the windward side of coats and jackets temporarily white.
