....yesterday I enjoyed watching the 1973 documentary Too Long a Winter on Utube....about of course Hannah Hauxwell (who died recently at 91) . She became famous nationally when the doc' came out, showing a white haired woman (only 42 then but looking much older) who was keeping an 80 acre farm goind on Baldersdale (now in County Durham , but considered by most North Yorkshire). It has a fantastic music soundtrack [RVW] too which focuses the hardships the farmers faced. Hannah in her layers of rags, living in her layers of family history and folklawe....

South Devon has closed down for the day, following a pathetic sprinkling of snow (now mostly gone) yesterday.

Softly southerners. Oh! I've become one.

....it's not snow you have to worry about. It is more likely that intense damp will see you off....

This weather is playing Hell with Amazon Logistics deliveries. I finally got round to ordering the DG Debussy Complete Works from amazon.de (£42.69 including p&p) as long as 2 days ago. It was scheduled for delivery tomorrow. A few minutes ago there was a tentative knock on the front door. A very personable chap, apparently of eastern European heritage, enquired as to whether my name was Brian or Bryn. I confirmed the latter and was presented with the over-packaged said boxed set. I suppose the slippery roads must have speeded the item on its way.

[Although the delivery country was given on the address label as "Vereinigtes Konigreich", the tracking strongly suggests it was dispatched within the V.K.. rather than D. It took but 2 hours 46 minutes to get from initial handover to the carrier to arrival at the Amazon Weybridge depot.]

They've got double trouble I imagine. Difficulties getting stuff to customers but also problems with getting things to the depots for onward delivery.

              Weather oop 'ere is LETHAL.
Wind is the fiercest anyone can remember, and directly easterly. Semi-blizzard, and pavements are deadly.

Thought it was thawing when I woke to see snow cleared off roofs, then realised it was the WIND that had ripped it all off.
Temp here as I write in -10C including wind chill

I was attempting irony. Less than 48 hours from the placing of the order to its delivery a day ahead of schedule is pretty impressive in my book, even though dispatch appears to have been from the UK rather than Germany.

Heavy overnight snow here with strong winds giving blizzard conditions and drifting. Train cancellations mean I can't get into work today

The roof of the outhouse opposite has a long row of icicles hanging from it and haven't seen those for many years.

I thought you might be, but it just set me thinking - not much else to do at the moment....
Helps them to say they exceed customer expectations though.

Here in the south, looks likely that moderate to heavy snow will soon be hitting Cornwall, Devon and Somerset, drifting in strong easterlies causing blizzard-type conditions for the northern quadrants of those counties, but the snow turning to sleet and even freezing rain as the warmer overhead air spills in over the southern quadrants, eg along the SW "riviera". Further progress north and east of this system looks like being delayed by what is known as a warm frontal breakaway, or development on the leading warm front boundary between the "beast" and Atlantic air to the south, heading east along the Channel into NE France later this evening and overnight, before at last shifting extensive snow north into the SE and London tomorrow morning and maybe reaching E Anglia and the S midlands during the afternoon. As that happens the easterlies still across Scotland, Wales and the north are expected to veer more south-easterly, bringing temperatures up slightly above freezing tomorrow afternoon, and eventually bringing a slow thaw to all parts by Sunday. There's comparative certainty about all areas except the extreme N of Scotland being in a "zonal" Atlantic southwesterly flow by Monday, temperatures gradually returning to seasonal normals and even becoming quite mild by Tuesday-Wednesday, though after that there's disagreement as to whether or not the Arctic highs that have led to the present exceptional cold will re-exert control over the circulation and push the polar jetstream back down to the Mediterranean again.

                        Do you have pavements?

Just back from Coop with a few things to tide me over for a few days. Nut roast and home made bread looks to be the diet . And a bottle of Coop Chianti. Passed a neighbour battling through wind and snow. Did I hear, 'Blooming Russians again'?
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Absolutely throwing it down here. Lots of the stuff. Working from home, but got a couple of miles walk in while the snow was gentler at lunchtime.

Just went for a quick mile-long walk as my daily consitutional, wot the doctor ordered. Just a few flakes of snow in the blustery wind, but the temperature hasn't exceeded minus 3 celsius all day, the paths white and powdery where ungritted, and as I passed an acquaintance, he commented, "It's going to feel almost like normal when it reaches zero!" "And like a heatwave when it gets back to normal", I said.

Good grief: So when I said in post 976 "I don't like this "Beast from the East" phrase". Who invents these things and gets everyone to say them? It sounds political and yet the Russians are having things far worse.", I was spot on. It is having the effect desired by whoever came up with it. I really don't like the way such propaganda is being designed for glib repetition.

I have thought for a while that Siberia gets a very bad press in this regard.
