The cold front/squall line passed through just after midday here; following a morning of desultory rain and occasional gusts, the sky to the NW suddenly darkening dramatically was upon us in double quick time, with low scud rushing down from the NW, five minutes of driving rain heavy enough to blot everything out beyond 100 metres, and the temperature dropping from 11.5 C to 7.5 C in 5 minutes and causing all my N-facing windows to steam up! Now we're into the nor'westerly which is said to be bringing severe gales and a lot of snow to Scotland and the NW - so I expect Draco will be benefitting us with some draconian news of all this!

Being cossetted in the relatively sheltered SE should all being well keep us protected down here, with most of the snow showers coming through the Cheshire Gap getting as far as Brum before petering out; all eyes are now on Sunday waiting to see how deep the next low to follow in the wake of Caroline becomes and which route it takes, in order to calculate as accurately as possible which areas will get snow or sleet and which will come under its "relatively-speaking" warm sector: truly a knife-edged matter of forecasting accuracy!

Snow frosting toppest tops, but lower down naught but dampish air and temperatures dropping fast with sharp, sneaking westerly. Already down from 8C earlier to 2C, some lingering sun between gathering cloud, so....this evening and tonight......?

The link below is to two webcams on the coast at Arran, on the western side of Scotland (for those who don't know!!) Shots are taken about every 5 seconds.

One of the best ways to see what Shetland has to offer is to experience it on film. Enjoy videos covering all aspects of island life, from close encounters with wildlife to lively community events.

I'm wondering if the low expected to pass NE across N France on Monday will be a record in terms of its depth. When I saw this prediction yesterday, I thought someone was having a laugh! In all the years I've been observing I've never seen one as deep as this one is predicted to be traverse any part of the Continent. If this is right I think there would be widespread devastation. I imagine Paris will be put on a Red Alert.

                    Happening, really? Oh no!

                    Bright sunshine today!

Steel hard frost here, sort of sun. Greying gradually. And, boy, is it cold!

It's a smidgen milder further down the road in this bit of the Pennines - reaching the heady heights of 1 degree ("feeling like - 2"), so the snowfall of Thursday night hasn't melted away. Still, this at least is making for a brighter day, with sunlight reflected off the snow - and that is so very much preferable to the dismal, bleak, dark grey of earlier in the week.

Nonetheless, I don't intend venturing outside!

It wasn't that bad cycling to St Sprees in E Dulwich and back this morning, despite sparkling frost on many unsalted road surfaces, and an air temperature of minus 3 Celsius. Cycyling home, the worst problem at this time of year is the low angle of sunlight blotting out all visibility of what's coming! I really don't understand how drivers cope with this: on my bike I just carry on, keeping as in to my side as I am able.

Anyone located between a line east-west roughly through Luton to another through Sheffield looks to be in for heavy laying snowfall tomorrow. South of the first line rain and strong winds seem to be option on offer; then on Monday it's back to very cold for everyone.

Some snow showers here this morning to top up the light dusting from yesterday but the forecast is for more serious snowfall from 5am to lunchtime tomorrow. it's felt cold today but milder than I expected - or perhaps I'm just getting used to it.

Some light snow falls on the River Ribble estuary earlier this morning but it soon disappeared.

We are experiencing quite a windy day today. Gusts over 45 mph, imo. SA?
