Coldish start, lovely sunny morning, warmer than the temperature indicated, but now cloud "infill" with cumulus puffing up and threatening to spread out - as always seems to happen in summer with cold ridges of high pressure following showery lows.

Aha! I fooled it, and put my washing out yesterday when it got an extra rinse. It'll be fine today.

Lovely day here! A case of sunny intervals, I think.

A lovely afternoon at Titsey Place although it clouded over for a period around 3pm.

Grey, apprehensive a.m., forecast suggesting nastiness, and given SE wind - unusual here - suggests continental nastiness. Temp merest 13C.

Here has changed from several hours of rain to damp grey and misty.

Lots of thunder this afternoon, in a line roughly from N Somerset to Norfolk, moving slowly south-east, affecting NE London and S Essex, with lots more where it has often taken place this summer, around the Suffolk/Norfolk border; and now there's a nice line of big puffy purple and brown-shaded cumulus about to cross us, so a few hailstones in the next few minutes I expect. It hasn't been very warm here today, but has felt very heavy.

That weather was mentioned by a number of contributers to a weather website from the Brighton area yesterday, and it surprised me too, as the cold front causing it brought just a couple of spells of moderate rain here - nothing to write home about. I see there's a bit of a thunderstorm proceeding right now over where our contributer Bryn lives, and it looks as if we're in for some of that, later, if it keeps going. All pretty small scale compared to what the poor folks are currently experiencing in the Caribbean region, and is about to hit Miami and its six million inhabitants, most of them safely evacuated, one hopes!

Just had a look at the BBC forecast for Miami and it shows nothing remotely unusual. Wind speed tomorrow topping at 86 mph. Fake news?

BBC News said that Hurricane Irma has increased again to category 4, as it hits Florida, with winds up to 130mph.

I'm confused - nothing new there - but the BBC News website says the eye of Irma has just hit Florida with winds of up to 130mph. But isn't the eye the calm centre of a hurricane, not its destructive outer part?
