The past few days have been quite a rollercoaster temperature-wise, depending on direction of the wind and whether the sun has managed to get through. Layers have been very much the order of the day; Wednesday was glorious and jackets and jumpers were shed during the weekly volunteer garden session, but Thursday was distinctly chilly until the sun finally got through mid-afternoon.
Similar weather anticipated to last until next weekend, so farmers can't complain this year about lacking the conditions optimal for seed setting. Make the most of it, since a breakdown is expected by next weekend. It does look likely from the present viewpoint to be a relatively gentle breakdown, with day and night time temperatures climbing during this week and remaining relatively high beyond that point.

I'll just be glad to see the back of the vicious easterly wind that has blighted most of the past week. The news that one day, Wednesday I think, was forecast to be the warmest day of the year so far produced a hollow laugh here as the god-awful wind, laughably described as a 'moderate breeze' on BBC forecasts, sent temperatures plummeting and winter coat and woolly hat were the order of the day. That wind has only now slightly eased off and should be gone by tomorrow.

We could certainly do with the rain in these parts.

Sorry to hear that, Petrushka. Here in Cheshire it's been lovely for a week or more and the easterly breeze has been just gentle. I keep expecting it to change and I'm sure there will be a wet spell before May. After all the rain we had earlier in the year this dry spell is too good to be true.

          .

... a truly exhilarating spring of late - yesterday my wife and I were in different parts of town doing different things : she in Balham, and I in Borough Market and Hyde Park - but when we met back in Shepherd's Bush both agreed there had seldom been a day more productive of weather-induced joy : the blossom, buds on the trees, leaves suddenly in evidence, insect and bird life thrumming away ( out of discretion (and because the light was against me) I didn't photograph the herons copulating on their nest in the tree on the island in the Serpentine... ). No, something really special

Same here - but I've lived here on the Suffolk coast for a long time and know what to expect in the way of weather at this time of year. All of 10°C at the moment.

It was warm enough to allow for an hour's sunbathing on the western aspect of our block - certainly not today, when notwithstanding another day of Walter Wall Blue Skies the maximum temperature of 13 C must have occurred the second when the wind dropped sufficiently to allow the sun's penetrative warmth. The cardie was really needed for the cycle down to W Dulwich mini Tesco through near-empty streets - schools now on their Easter break.

It now looks as if the coming weekend's "breakdown" will turn out a bit hit and miss as regards rainfall: the first widespread proper rain looks most likely to occur next Tuesday and Wednesday as a wee low forms over N France, then moves north and deepens over the SE and Midlands before ending up in the north North Sea.

Still ruddy cold here despite the official forecast of up to 17C - just 12C as I write. That brilliant cloudless sunshine is very deceptive!

Our solar panels are enjoying it (I read that they are more efficient when not scorching hot): 225 kWh exported to the grid already this month!

This afternoon the deception was finally lifted and there has been actual proper warmth. It was cold this morning as although there was little breeze the sun wasn't inclined to show its face, but once it got out at midday and the northerly airflow continued barely perceptible it was a pleasure to be pottering in the garden.
The lack of rain is getting tiresome - and the farmers hereabouts won't be too happy on the light lands as the soil on arable fields is lifting in the wind and the dryness is hampering germination, and on pasture the grass isn't growing as fast as needed. The contractors on the building site at the bottom of my garden had to stop earth moving yesterday as the clouds of dust were thick enough to obscure vision - and not nice to work in. I was so glad that the wind was not blowing due east(and so into my garden) at that point as I was putting out washing when the worst of it erupted.
The forecast here doesn't give any suggestion as yet of rain for next week; if any does materialise I suspect it could be light and very local.

15C here this afternoon (N. Wilts). Took a cycle ride without gloves and despite sunshine got v chilly fingers.

Only 14C here - much cooler than the 16C max forecast for the London 'burbs, though very pleasant for a 4-mile walk around the more... scenic districts hereabouts!
