Not surprisingly, given the dimensions of yesterday's cold front rain band, parts of Wales and the West generally received 4 inches of rain. The width of the rain zone was pretty exceptional for a cold front - more than 150 miles for most of its length, adding to problems due to the system's very slow passages across the UK.

It looks like a changeable week to come for all areas - belts of rain crossing the country with intervening coldish westerlies - but with slight hopes for high pressure build up from the south-west by the weekend. Nothing particularly springlike, but at least the sun, when it shines, feels a bit stronger now.

Edit: A moderate shower now falling means I'm glad I decided to postpone my afternoon shopping trip - temperature still a reasonable 12 celsius.

Splendid weather this afternoon in the Nortk York Moors for a walk along the trackbed of the old ironstone railway. Fantastic views of Rosedale and all the industrial archeology*.

Today's expected rain passed through by early afternoon, ensuring a dry stroll over to Iceland on the Triangle and back. Kensington seems to have had an episode of heavy rain, which missed us, a mere eight miles away. A line of weakening "clearing showers", switching the wind direction from westerly to a nor'wester, is passing across just now, with some beautiful salmon pink-illuminated mammatus right overhead, and the whole landscape suffused in brilliant orange by the setting sun, reminding one of the old sodium-powered street lights that transformed outdoor city nightlife into a monochrome.

With high pressure building in from the west this will probably be the last rainfall for some time to come, with the exception of Scotland and N Ireland.

Any long-range predictions for South Wales S_A? We go for a week to The Gower on Saturday - perhaps travelling on St. David's Day may prove a good omen!

Pictures of my above-mentioned Mammatus clouds I think people will find stunning:

Simon King explains what's behind the bright orange clouds you may have noticed on Wednesday.

Today was colder than forecast, only just managing to reach 10C despite the bright sunshine.

Family in NW Scotland have seen mammatus clouds several times in the past few months, but photos have only been of uncoloured versions.
Lots of sun today, and despite a sharp frost(got down to -5.6 just before sun-up apparently) it was pleasant out in the morning. Got chillier in the afternoon though, as the airflow did a bit of a twirl between N and South, and more cloud appeared.

Mr Nice Guy weather has left the room this week. Not unexpected but the change is a bit of a shock nonetheless. The strong N or NE winds are knocking back already lower temperatures, so the woolly jumpers, scarves and gloves are out again. The occasional bursts of sunshine, the birdsong and the early spring flowers do help to make it less grim than a few weeks ago fortunately.

... so weird : we were with family in Dromore (County Down) yesterday - back in London this morning Petroc going on about a caller from Dromore (reporting a temperature of -1, I think). Dromore never features in anything...

Of course, you are nearer to the coast then here, where the temperature fall today has felt more muted. This will have the effect of postponing the progress of spring, while at the same time prolonging the flowering of the daffodils. We might get to see snow in any showers later in the week!

Reports of snow falling at the top of Sutton Bank this morning at 0600h. Certainly nothing there now though!

The attached article has me thinking in terms of this particular district. Given that it is heavily (and some would say enviably) wooded, are we at greater risk from fires due to climate change?

That summer saw temperatures in this country hit 40°C for the first time and left firefighters stretched, with London Fire Brigade having its ‘busiest day since the Second World War’. The study, involving the Met Office, UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology and University of Exeter, highlights h...

I tend to assume not. There is no open grassland or heath in the vicinity, and our neighbouring woodlands and street trees are nearly all of the temperate deciduous type - although we do have three tall conifers in the garden which would be easily flammable.
