There has evidently been snow around London this morning, to judge by photographs and youtube footage sent in. I think there must've been sleet here around 8am, but I was still snugly tucked up in bed at the time and missed that! The occluded frontal system bringing the snow really seems to be dragging its heels, with still no telltale sign of clearance to the north. What was most extraordinary though relates to what we were discussing about temperature extremes within short distances yesterday. At 8am the temperature on the south side of the Isle of Wight was 12C, at Southampton 5C and Winchester 2C. That represented the transition range on each side of the bent-back occlusion lying E-W along the south coast at that point. for accuracy's sake I have had to record 10C as today's highest temperature, because that was what it was between midnight and 6 am! 4C right now with light rain and drizzle. I suppose I will have to take my usual constitutional at some point this afternoon - and I am not looking forward to that!

I sympathise. I'm trying to gee myself up to get out, as the wet/cold stuff has stopped falling out of the sky now and, although the sun isn't out, the cloud layer is noticeably lighter than earlier. Trouble is that my knee and back are very sore and I don't have a purpose to going out other than "it's good for you" so it's a bit of an uphill battle at the moment! The prospects for volunteer gardening tomorrow are looking minimal to non-existent so that won't help the exercise/fresh air quotient either.

The usual recommended remedy is gentle exercise. Have anti-inflammatories been tried? They work for me (sometimes painful knee joints) long enough to make the initial work of exercising to start the strengthening necessary to take care of itself. I suppose any success depends how far "down the road" the condition has developed.

Well, that was some frost last night, -4.5 minimum at the recording station - which I can believe as I got -2.8 in my woodstore by the back door. It comes on top of a sharp one the previous night that didn't entirely disappear during the day - pavements that didn't get the sun required care.
The temperature readings from the recording station fluctuated noticeably during the night, although always well below zero, presumably in response to the wind direction which seemed to have been going through a bit of turmoil.
The sun is welcome but it won't have much effect on much of the ice. I need to find some alternative containers as temporary bird baths, as the ice is welded to the two 'proper' ones I have so I can't refill them.

Zero was our minimum here last night under cloudy skies, so I expect considerably lower tonight, although the Met Office thinks otherwise. Everyone should be prepared for very, very windy and wet weather for Saturday and Sunday, but with soaring temperatures for these two days (relatively speaking) before they descend to nearer to late November norms for the forseeable - meaning maxima of 10C for London and surrounds.

The forecast for overnight and Friday daytime temperatures have been changing upwards( and are currently shown as clear of freezing, although a glance at the cars outside would suggest otherwise) over the past few hours. I'm hoping they are correct as I need to do the Lidl, Aldi, Tesco shop plus some other bits that weather and my bad knee prevented, and the thought of coping with frozen car and sub-zero conditions was worrying me.The bus I would use for the supermarkets, which are the priority(running out of basics like milk), can't run on my bit of the route currently due to road closure.

Snow first thing this morning here, but not sufficient to settle. Now the temperature is 6C - almost the average, for... January! This weekend's weather looks really scary, with a very deep low heading NW of Ireland, 937 MB at its centre. I remember the days when that would have been almost off the scale. No storm-naming as yet - not sure how close depressions have to get to our coastlines to be christened.

... isn't this storm Bert, second named storm of the season, as flagged up on the telly weather forecasts yesterday?

New National Severe Weather Warnings have been issued for Saturday and Sunday as Storm Bert heads towards the UK. The weather system will bring heavy rain and snow, together with strong winds to large swathes of the country.

It did thank you. When I surfaced at 7-30 the cars were virtually frost free, so by the time I set out no need for windscreen action, and the car was nice and warm thanks to the sun, which has been out all day. The wind is quite strong and cold though, several degrees of wind chill, so the walk into town for the errands I didn't get done before lunch was quite - erm invigorating...

                            Batten down the hatches!

The Met Office says the approaching storm poses a danger to life in coastal parts of Wales and south-west England.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

The naming of storms is I think a useful idea, but it is inevitable that some of the names chosen will not be to personal taste, not least as different groups are involved in the naming process.
Today is one of those 'butter wouldn't melt' bright sunny mornings that go some way towards forgetting about last night's 10 minute walk to choir resulting in dripping all through rehearsal, due to the high wind and heavy rain together being more than my waterproof could deal with. Luckily the rehearsal hall was warm, and an intensive pre-concert rehearsal provided distraction. It wasn't meant to be that bad and indeed the recording station 20 miles to the west only shows light rain and brisk breeze with gusts for the relevant part of the evening( I always allow for the fact that weather happens there before here) so what happened between that and what hit here a bit later I don't know.
