Frost! The temperature dropped suddenly and very noticeably last night, as I became aware when walking back from choir, and the evening forecast said the possibility of an air frost in some places. However it was cold enough not only for crunchy grass all the way down the garden but also to put a skim of ice across the bird bath towards the end. Luckily the patio near the house stays less cold, so the tender plants in the planters escaped and will show colour for a while yet I hope, and give me a chance to repot for indoors the couple of plants I want or need to keep. The lack of a greenhouse becomes tiresomely obvious when frost come unseasonably early!

The fact that it was only the coldest night since May 5 demonstrates how short what can only be generously described as our "warm season" actually lasts. Having said that, it does promise to warm up again next week, with temperatures reaching the upper teens celsius, and even the possibility of a thundery breakdown midweek!

Ah, but when do we get bracing entrails of Hurrricane Milton arrving on western shores and hills?

Milton has now fizzled out as a hurricane over the eastern seaboard states, albeit now still giving heavy rains south of the Great Lakes; but it has something of a head start when it re-deepens as a temperate depression, exits America early next week by way of the Hudson river, and arrives in the mid-north Atlantic NW of Scotland by Friday as a deep depression, but otherwise indistinguishable from a normal Atlantic autumn low. That will mean back to changeable but with winds in the south west quadrant at least it will be on the mild side - as I keep re-assuring the still-flowering Bizzie Lizzie (since June!) outside my front door!

Generally dank and drizzly, so nothing is drying out following last night's quite heavy rain. But one can hope for the morrer! - temps forecast to reach 18C; but will it be dry for an end-of-season long bike ride? Only by gazing up at the clouds will I be able to tell.

Generally dank and drizzly, so nothing is drying out following last night's quite heavy rain. But one can hope for the morrer! - temps forecast to reach 18C; but will it be dry for an end-of-season long bike ride? Only by gazing up at the clouds will I be able to tell.

I hope before you set off, rather than while in transit...
It was murky yesterday, although not too chilly. Today looks to be a repeat of the murk, but continuing "dry"(ie not raining or drizzling) and a little warmer than yesterday. A load of washing has been put out - it may not get noticeably dry, but it will lose some moisture as there is a bit of a breeze, so will do a bit better when it comes indoors to be put on the airer. A bit of gardening beckons for later on; now the soil is finally moist I can get on with weeding ready to put a bit of mulch or compost down in the borders.

I actually managed an hour's sunbathing in the garden this afternoon! It was a bit breezy but not sufficiently to deter. I can not recall doing so this late in the year.
