I always pass by Hammersmith Terrace on these trips, as one is forced to do given that the riverside path is not available at that point, and the unusualness of the alternatiing windows' positioning -- more typical of the backs of properties in that age, one might think - has always ticked me.

... that's bicoz what you see IS the back of the house - the front of the house faces the river!
I assume that in the 1750s you wd more often reach there by river than by land - the road from central London to those parts notorious for highwaymen...

It was a very chilly start to the day here and with the winds as strong as they were I decided to put on jeans and long sleeve shirt for the volunteer gardening. As the sun got going tit became warmer, but not such that I regretted the coverup.
Still no rain(every time recently it appears on the forecast, as time goes on the certainty of it happening reduces and then, even if a band passes across, it divides as it reaches this part of the county, leaving us dry) and with the strong and constant winds many plants are looking decidedly the worse for wear, and there are a lot of leaves coming off the trees.

Winds here enough to close Yorkshire Arboretum to the public Thursday and Friday morning. Is a bit grey here and windy, but does not seem that bad (no yellow warnings anyway*).

Another drab, grey day here. 17 degrees but very windy. There's been a sudden feeling of impending autumn in the past few days. Now getting dark alarmingly early.

Spiteful today. I was woken up just before 6am by a loud clattering which turned out to be a high wind hurling rain at the bedroom window and the plastic front door below(the construction of which seems specifically designed to maximise the sound of such rain) so an unwanted early start to the day. The amount of rain isn't significant in the first place but having it blown away like this just adds insult to injury when everything is so very dry now. The large amount of dust in the air is being taken down but as so little rain is reaching the ground it's not being fully washed away, instead it's being applied with some force to any surfaces facing the wind which will then end up grubby when it dries.
Cold as well. On the plus side, selfishly, better today than yesterday which was my regular volunteer gardening day; such weather wouldn't prevent the activity,but it would make it unpleasant(getting smacked in the face by the climbing rose one is trying to tie in...) and discourage spending longer than absolutely necessary on site.

Unsettled, windy and prematurely autumnal this weekend as the remains of Hurricane Ernesto pass to the north, but patience! Heat is forecast to return midway through next week and last through to the weekend.

Is there a case to be made for moving the August Bank Holiday back to its traditional spot at the beginning of the month?

Now I'm retired it doesn't matter much to me as every day is a Bank Holiday but the last Monday in August is already usually more autumnal with the nights drawing noticeably in and the weather has less chance of holding up.

I can't remember the rationale for changing it in the first place (sometime in the 1960s, I think) but when working I'd definitely have preferred the earlier date.

Unless there is some useful rain prior to that I won't view the return of heat positively I'm afraid. Selfish I realise but I have had little enough produce from my veg patch this year and would like a chance at the last opportunity for same - the runner and french beans, but they are close to giving up due to the unrelenting drying wind, which also doesn't help with insect pollination.

I googled it and it also gave the date as 1971. However, my 1970 diary has the August Bank Holiday on August 31 and it definitely was from the entry I made that day. My 1966 to 1969 diaries refer to it as the Late Summer Bank Holiday with the last two years being on September 1 and 2. It's likely that it may have been for an experimental period of five years and the 1971 Act made it official. I was between 12 to 16 at this time.

The late date never did make much sense to me and would have preferred the first Monday in August as it was when I was a child.
