Luckily I only had a few errands to do and they can wait until tomorrow when it should be slightly less hot - in the morning at least.

Hottest day so far this year, just having now reached 30c, which may be exceeded in the next couple of hours if the cloud clears, but I'm staying well indoors with curtains firmly shut until this evening, by which time the wind will have veered westerly, bringing in slightly cooler (but still humid) air behind the elevated thundery trough which has mostly affected the West country, Midlands and North with pretty spectacular lightning displays, one learns.

I can’t really complain, it only happens once a year (if that)… but with my phone telling me it was 32°, it was a hot trudge back home from Hyde Park Corner."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I took the thermometer for a walk down the garden at 4pm* yesterday and it reached 34.4 by the time I got back to the house... Finding that a bit hard to believe I later got my two others and put them all outside in the same place(out of the sun and not on a hot surface) and as they all agreed on the temperature then I have to assume the earlier high wasn't that far adrift. It would certainly explain why, when I had opened the back door I was pushed back by the wall of heat that met me!
There was a sprinkle of rain late evening and also in the early hours, not enough to show in the bird bath, but it has washed the copious dust out of the air and freshened things up a bit for now, although with the cloud clearing the temperature will quickly rise so I need to get myself together to do my errands before it gets too hot - although fingers crossed nowhere near as bad as yesterday.
*The Met Office local records for yesterday show 32.5 at that time I see.

The wind switch around to a south-westerly brought fresher conditions in the evening, which I took advantage of by throwing open all the windows and making the flat breathable once more. That temperature drop, from 30C to 15C overnight, brought a beautful feel to the air first thing this morning, so at 6 am I took a short walk around the block before road traffic got going to sniff that wonderful scent which always follows the heat of a day, then went back to bed for three hours to catch up on much-needed sleep! The sky was almost clear blue at midday with just a few "feathers" of cirrus, and a temperature of just 21c as against 27C at the same time yesterday. My wilting pot plants outside have perked up again from the watering I gave them last thing last night. Now it's off on the bike for a few groceries.
A couple more cold fronts are due to pass through before all is hoped to settle down once more for a good weekend.

Family member in bonny Scotland reported temperatures getting on for 20 degrees colder than I was experiencing due in no small part to 40mph winds. "Keeps the midgies away" was the resigned comment - followed by "and the tourists", which of course is a double-edged thing. Pressure of numbers and poor behaviour(much due to plain ignorance) has caused problems but the permanent residents depend on the summer takings to see them through the winter.
